Jonah Hill Kiss Scene in You People Was Created Entirely With CGI

According to Andrew Schulz, who played a supporting role in You People, Jonah Hill’s kiss with Lauren London was created entirely with CGI.

You People actor Andrew Schulz reveals that Jonah Hill’s kiss with Lauren London was actually created using CGI. Directed by Kenya Barris, You People was released on Netflix last month to mostly negative reviews. The romantic comedy film follows Ezra (Hill) and Amira (London) as they enter into a relationship and attempt to navigate a complicated world of clashing cultures and societal expectations stemming from their racial differences. You People also stars Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Duchovny, Nia Long, and Schulz, who plays cousin Avi.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In a recent interview on his podcast, Brilliant Idiots, Schulz reveals that the kiss at the end of You People between Hill and London was created entirely using CGI.

The actor and comedian explains that, on set, Hill and London went in for the kiss and then stopped, with CGI then being used to accomplish the rest. Check out Schulz’s full comment below:

“I don’t even know if I should share this s–t, but in the final scene, they don’t even kiss. It’s CGI. Swear to god, son. I’m there [on set] watching the wedding, and I see them go in for the kiss. And their faces stop like this far [gestures about six inches apart]. And I’m like, ‘I wonder how they’re going to play that in the movie. Oh, they’re probably just going to cut right there.’ But in the movie, you could see their faces come close, and then you can see their faces morph a little bit into a fake kiss.”

Other Surprising Uses of CGI In Movies

Jeremy Renner jumps over a chair in Tag.

Schulz’s reveal that Hill and London never locked lips in that particular scene in You People comes as more is revealed about just how extensively visual effects are used in movies to enhance or alter what viewers are seeing on the screen. Newly shared data reveals that VFX are used in roughly 85% of movies to de-age stars, with the practice called “digital makeup.” The effects are so subtle and convincing that it almost always goes unnoticed.

On top of subtle digital makeup, VFX were famously used in the 2018 movie Tag to replace Jeremy Renner’s arms when the star broke them only days into filming. On top of covering up blemishes and injuries, however, CGI has been used for years in subtle ways that may go unnoticed by audiences. 2012’s Dark Shadows used VFX to remove all of Johnny Depp’s blinking to make his vampire character more creepy, and The Social Network flawlessly used VFX back in 2010 to allow Armie Hammer to play a set of twins.

Although the kiss in You People stands out as fairly obvious now that Schulz revealed the truth about the scene, the moment speaks to just how often VFX may be used for seemingly trivial moments in modern movies. It’s easy to spot CGI in the latest Marvel movies because characters are often accomplishing things that regular human beings aren’t capable of. When VFX are used to de-age actors, alter landscapes, or oddly, complete a kiss, however, it becomes much harder to spot.
