Kit Harington Doesn’t Know If Black Knight Will Ever Appear In The MCU

[ad_1]

Kit Harington says he doesn’t know what the future holds for his Eternals character, Dane Whitman, or if the Black Knight will debut in the MCU.

Kit Harington admits that he doesn’t know if the Black Knight will join the MCU after Eternals. The fan-favorite Game of Thrones star is part of Chloé Zhao’s impressive Eternals line-up, debuting in cinemas on November 5. The film marks the latest entrant into Phase 4 of the MCU, following after Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Harington is set to portray Dane Whitman, the man who would inherit the Ebony Blade and become the Black Knight in the comic books. Though the character is allegedly yet to acquire the cursed sword in Eternals, Whitman’s appearance in the film indicates Marvel has at least considered the introduction of his moniker. Normally featured alongside heroic groups like the Avengers and the Defenders, Whitman’s involvement with the Eternals ensemble marks a shake-up to the character’s comic book history and perhaps even his origin story.

Now, in an interview with Variety, Harington confesses that he doesn’t know what the future holds for his character in the MCU or if the Black Knight will ever make an appearance. Asked how he acquired the role in Eternals, Harington admits that he was offered it without an audition and knew very little about Whitman beforehand. He adds that he “can’t predict” whether Marvel intends his character to take on a larger role in the future but thinks he has “a lot of meat to get into.” Check out Harington’s remarks in full below:

“I spoke to [producer] Nate Moore. I’d had a meeting with Kevin [Feige] a year or so prior. I went into meet them at Marvel. It was a kind of general meeting. But it was Nate who rang me up and spoke to me about the possibilities for the character and what they wanted to do with the Eternals. And then I met with Chloe. And, you know, they’d said, “Look, it’s not a major part size-wise in this movie, but it’s a really interesting character that could go somewhere cool.” I did some reading up on it. And then I said, “Yes.””

“[…] If I’m totally honest, I hadn’t heard of the character. I had to sort of read up on him and try not to fall down too many black holes on the internet and just see what the basics were. But the essence of the character and his powers seem to me very interesting. God knows where it’s gonna go. So I don’t know, I can’t predict whether, where, if anywhere, they’ll take the character. But the basics of him having something that seems to be cursed, I thought, had a lot of meat to get into.”

Kit Harington as Dane Whitman Black Knight in Eternals

The admission from Harington should perhaps come as no surprise from a franchise that is, by now, renowned for its secrecy. Already the former Jon Snow actor, who became used to concealing spoilers on the set of Game of Thrones, has said that Eternals has introduced him to a whole new level of secrecy. Fellow castmate, Angelina Jolie, has already demonstrated that the new ensemble is reluctant to speak about their respective MCU futures. So, while likely that Marvel is merely keeping its cards close to its chest, even from its own Phase 4 castmates, it’s also plausible that Harington is simply avoiding giving credence to spoilers.

Any confirmation that Harington may return in future installments will certainly only bolster the belief that the Black Knight is inevitably joining the MCU. It seems unlikely that Marvel would introduce Whitman without seeing out his full character potential, particularly in the wake of Avengers: Endgame, which saw the loss of two key heroes: Iron Man and Captain America. The Black Knight is commonly associated with the Avengers in the comic books, making him a fitting new addition to the MCU as it fills in a few newly acquired power vacuums. Still, with no word on Harington’s future, fans will have to wait and see what direction Marvel takes his character in Eternals.
