Lord Of The Rings: 10 Memes That Perfectly Sum Up Legolas & Gimli’s Rivalry

[ad_1]

The chemistry between Legolas and Gimli was such a strong part of The Lord of the Rings films that Amazon’s The Rings of Power series attempted to mimic it. While Elrond and Durin were a delight on screen, they still have a long way to go before earning the affection fans have for the classic Elf/Dwarf duo.

The original trilogy by Peter Jackson did a wonderful job creating moments of humor to balance the serious themes of the War of the Ring. Lord of the Rings fans are known for delivering great quality memes about the characters, and the rivalry between Legolas and Gimli is often a source for this content.

10/10 The Real Comedic Relief

Merry and Pippen are certainly funny, and add a necessary light-hearted flavor early on. Throughout the trilogy, however, Legolas and Gimli’s growth as friends and the rivalry they shared added so many memorable lines and meme formats that fans still quote today.

Like most Elves and Dwarves in Lord of the Rings, the two characters have immense pride, and display it in entirely different ways. Gimli is more rash and abrasive, while Legolas is posher. The mixture is terrific.

9/10 Would You Like Me To Find You A Box?

The collection of odd Dean Norris photos makes for some hilarious memes, in this case capturing the joke before the Battle of Helm’s Deep in a perfectly absurd way. “Shall I describe it to you, or would you like me to find you a box?” is such a perfect one-liner to sum up their rivalry, as Legolas usually seems to get the best of his dwarf friend.

8/10 Solidarity

Much of the rivalry between Gimli and Legolas comes from the distaste Dwarves and Elves have for one another. Elves certainly consider themselves to be a far superior species than Dwarves, and certainly over humans. Though the latter is something they’d both agree on.

While Legolas doesn’t seem to have any great hatred for Dwarves, he does carry the sense of entitlement many Elves treat Dwarves with. And Gimli vice-versa. It’s fun to think about the rivalry turned friendship between the two actually serving as a union for the two peoples.

7/10 Don’t Tell The Elf

Aragorn did promise not to tell Legolas about the tossing of Gimli during the Battle of Helm’s Deep. While he seems like a man of his word, it’s amusing to imagine him and Legolas laughing about it after the war is over. Much to Gimli’s disdain.

Like with the Dean Norris meme, unamused and annoyed facial expressions pair so well with Gimli’s attitude. He’s definitely a Dwarf who can handle a joke, and is quick to give them back out. Some of Gimli’s most character-defining quotes are his quick-witted one-liners and verbal threats.

6/10 A 19-2 Lead

When thinking about the greatest chokes in the history of sport and competition, the Golden State Warriors often come to mind. But 19-2 is far worse of a lead to blow than 3-1. After all the humor pointed in Gimli’s direction, it’s nice to see him get the last laugh here.

It’s difficult to imagine how Legolas only managed to produce 23 more kills in this massive battle. Perhaps he was low on arrows, or Gimli decided to work on his stamina after all the running in The Two Towers.

5/10 The Legolas Snap

There are tons of memes about the “that still only counts as one” line, with continued exaggerations for what Gimli might count as one. One of the funniest Gimli memes was an image of Gimli saying the destruction of the Death Star only counted as one. This meme ups the ante a bit, from Oliphant, to space station destruction, to Thanos Snap.

Had Legolas vanquished the entire army of orcs with the Infinity Gauntlet, it may have made their competition a tad bit unfair. Gimli’s proud nature and the fierceness of their rivalry definitely would have seen Gimli declare the snap as one killing motion, and therefore, only one tally for the count.

4/10 Competition Amidst Chaos

Competing over killing blows makes Gimli and Legolas seem more like a group of friends playing video games together, rather than two people in the middle of an actual war. The light-hearted humor definitely works for the movie though, and is definitely an element that separates it from a series like Game of Thrones.

While in George R.R. Martin’s universe, main characters can be killed at any moment, Lord of the Rings fans can rest assured that their heroes will live to save the day against evil and darkness. The meme demonstrates the absurdity of their interaction, and how the humor distances these war scenes from the dread of realistic war. The comedic relief moments make this series one of the best options for family adventure movies on HBO Max.

3/10 Two-Faced Legolas

Most of Legolas and Gimli’s scenes together are amongst other fighting companions and friends, but it’s likely that the banter between the two doesn’t stop when the two are alone or not in the middle of battle. The bit from the Family Guy/Star Wars specials is funny to imagine though. The cast for a Family Guy/Lord of the Rings parody has already been thought out.

Preparing for a battle on the walls of Helm’s Deep would definitely be the wrong time to get into the nature of their relationship, but it’s fun to imagine this conversation. Neither seem like they’d be willing to be vulnerable to that extent, with Gimli being particularly closed off on whether jokes like this would hurt his feelings.

2/10 How The Orcs Feel About It

The morale of the fighters is definitely an important aspect of war. If an Orc was to enter a fight and see that the Dwarf and Elf it was about to face were, laughing and joking around about their kill streaks, it may think twice and turn around. The Orcs are as intelligent as other races, but they may be too hateful to turn back on the idea of killing. Or they just can’t hear the fun quips that the audience gets to listen to.

Lord of the Rings meme creators must have scanned every inch of the extended editions of the films to find the perfect screen captures for every image. This Orc’s expression is priceless, and is definitely the way one would react to hearing about Gimli and Legolas’ competition. Their efforts to top each other in kills are mighty dangerous for the enemy.

1/10 He Took That Personally

The Michael Jordan from The Last Dance meme format is essential for any topic about competition or rivalry. It’s hilarious, but also perfectly captures the idea of a win-at-all-costs mentality. The way Legolas and Gimli light a fire in each other to perform better on the battlefield is a huge part of their rivalry.

The battle may have been lost had Gimli not thought to amp up his killing numbers. How he managed to catch up is questionable, but the ferocity of wanting to beat his rival could be the answer.
