As The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s release date fast approaches, the movie’s official Twitter account has released a new look at Luigi, this time with the character in a troubling situation.

With what appears to be Bowser’s castle looming ominously in the background, the poster for The Super Mario Bros. Movie features Luigi tied up as a prisoner. It’s not clear exactly what the group of Shy Guys have planned for Luigi, but Day’s character looks suitably terrified, which is in keeping with how he was depicted in a previous poster as well.

Mario & Luigi’s Dynamic Could Be Key In The Super Mario Movie

It’s not clear what the actual storyline of The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be, but the friendship between Mario and Luigi could end up being a key component. One of the inherent struggles of adapting a video game is condensing a very long, action-heavy adventure into a digestible two-hour story. This is an even more difficult task for The Super Mario Bros. Movie because Nintendo’s original games are generally light on narrative complexity and genuine emotion.

The upcoming film will need to add depth to fan-favorite characters like Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach and build out their dynamic in order to tell a compelling story. While delivering some impressive visuals, game-accurate lore, and fun Easter eggs will ultimately help The Super Mario Bros. Movie succeed, these flourishes won’t mean very much unless the movie has characters worth rooting for. Digging deeper into the bond between Mario and Luigi could also help The Super Mario Bros. Movie potentially dig into universal themes regarding friendship.

Pratt’s Mario voice quickly proved divisive when The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer was released. By fleshing out Mario as a character, however, and creating a strong bond between him and Luigi, concerns regarding Pratt’s voice may ultimately be able to be overlooked. While not all the voice performances in The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be totally game-accurate, the actors will be key in selling the bonds between their characters and adding emotion to the storyline.
