Mamma Mia Star Reveals The One ABBA Song She Never Wants to Hear Again

Amanda Seyfried, who starred in the 2008 film adaptation of the ABBA jukebox musical Mamma Mia!, reveals which song from the band she can’t listen to.

Mamma Mia! star Amanda Seyfried reveals the one ABBA song she never wants to hear again. The Swedish pop band’s massive hits were assembled into a hit jukebox musical in 1999. Seyfried went on to star in the 2008 film adaptation, playing a young woman named Sophie who grew up on a remote Greek island with her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) and invites three men who might be her father (Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, and Colin Firth) to her wedding.

Recently, Seyfried sat down with Vanity Fair to break down some scenes from her most famous movies, including Mamma Mia!.

The Mamma Mia! scene she discussed was the “Voulez-Vous” music number where she tries to discover which of the three men is her dad after they crash her bachelorette party. She shared her opinion that her dancing in the scene was bad, and the exhausting choreography made it feel like a “fever dream,” saying after that experience, “Voulez-Vous” is a song “I just never wanna hear.” Read her full quote below:

What a nightmare scenario. That “Voulez-Vous” song and this scene is just so traumatic because we spent so long learning this choreography.I can fake being a good dancer. I didn’t in this, I was just bad, but if I have enough time [I can]… This was just too much, it’s like the one ABBA song I just never wanna hear. This scene specifically is just very frantic… God, it’s like a fever dream.

Seyfried returned to the franchise ten years later in the 2018 sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. However, while the idea of a third film has been floating around since then, it hasn’t come to fruition. In spite of this many of the stars of the first two films have expressed their interest in returning. Recently, Here We Go Again director Ol Parker also shared that producer Judy Craymer always intended for there to be a trilogy, hinting that there may be one in the offing eventually.

At this year’s Golden Globes, the flame of hope was briefly lit for Mamma Mia! fans. When Amanda Seyfried won for her role in The Dropout, the announcer said she wasn’t in attendance because she was working on a new musical. While it was rumored that the project was a new Mamma Mia! film, it was later revealed to be a Broadway adaptation of 1991’s Thelma & Louise.

Luckily for Seyfried, there are plenty of non-“Voulez-Vous” ABBA tracks remaining in their songbook should Mamma Mia! get another sequel. Even if the third film doesn’t repeat iconic songs like “Dancing Queen” or “Super Trouper” like Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again did, it will have more than enough to fill an entire soundtrack. This is thanks to the band’s deep discography of hits, which was also refreshed considerably by their 10-song reunion album Voyage, which was released in 2021.
