Marvel Confirms Why The True Moon Knight Is Marc (Not Steven or Jake)

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Moon Knight, it’s confirmed why Marc Spector is Moon Knight rather than Steven Grant or Jake Lockley.

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Moon Knight #20

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Moon Knight, the reason why Marc Spector is Khonshu’s Fist of Justice over his alternate personalities is even further confirmed. While Steven Grant and Jake Lockley bring their own strengths to the table, Marc is the one who actually puts on the white suit and cape to fight criminals. As such, it looks as though there is a very particular reason for this, going beyond the simple fact that he’s the body’s original and primary personality.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In the new Moon Knight #20 from Jed MacKay and Alessandro Cappuccio, Marc is desperately trying to stay ahead of two assassins who’ve been tasked with killing every member of Moon Knight’s old Shadow Cabinet, a network of informants and agents who once helped him fight crime with extreme efficiency. However, Marc’s death years prior disbanded the Cabinet which never reassembled, making it even stranger that this largely anonymous group has now been identified and targeted. Unable to find the pattern of the assassins’ attacks, Marc gives control to Jake whose experience as a taxi driver proves invaluable in finding the killers’ route. However, Jake then gives control back to Marc as he’s unwilling to be the one to jump and glide off the rooftops as the actual Moon Knight.

Marc Spector Is The Only One Brave Enough To Be Moon Knight

Jake Lockley In Moon Knight #20

While this is a simple and brief interaction between Marc, Jake, and their assistant Reese who’s working out of Moon Knight’s Midnight Mission, it proves that Marc was specifically the one chosen by Khonshu to be his Fist. Jake and Steven manifested as personalities to help Marc, and by extension his work as Moon Knight, but Spector is the one who’s the physical vigilante at the end of the day. He’s always the one who beats up the criminals and leaps from the buildings into danger.

Jake being afraid of using Moon Knight’s glider implies that the trio of personalities has already tried mixing it up with others wearing the suit beyond Marc (with minimal success). However, it all evens out considering everything else that Steven and Jake bring to the table. This issue alone proves that Jake has knowledge Marc doesn’t as he was able to figure out where the assassins would strike next while Marc was at a loss.

It’s an important distinction that Marc Spector is the true Moon Knight while Steven and Jake are extensions of Marc. Although the MCU has changed this concept by making the Mr. Knight costume Steven’s unique version of Khonshu’s Fist, the comics are sticking with the original idea that Marc is predominantly Moon Knight with Steven and Jake being more than happy to let him do the heavy lifting as one of Marvel’s best vigilantes. Moon Knight #20 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
