The final arc of Mob Psycho 100 began with Mob contemplating his crush on Tsubome, a childhood friend of his, upon learning that she was moving away. While on the way to meet up with Tsubome and confess his feelings, Mob saved a child from getting hit by a car, taking the hit himself. The trauma combined with his desperation to see Tsubome unleashed his restrained psychic powers, and a Mob who’s no longer himself began a rampage across the city. Everyone from his friends to his old enemies to his own brother tried to stop him, each revealing how they came to care about Mob and that even in spite of this incident, they want him to be safe and happy. At last, Reigen (using Dimple’s power) was able to get close enough to Mob to finally confess that he was actually powerless and that the psychic/medium routine was all fake. This shocked Mob so much that the whirlwind of psychic energy dissipated, and at last the disaster came to an end.

The Perfect Ending for Mob Psycho 100

Mob Psycho 100: Reigen uses Dimple's power to approach Mob.

The series finale hit every beat it needed to. It saw the return of Dimple, who was thought to have been destroyed fighting Mob Psycho’s Psycho Helmet cult, and he played a critical role in saving Mob. The big lie between Reigen and Mob is addressed at last, and it turns out that of course some part of Mob knew all along that Reigen was lying. That part of him just also assumed that Reigen would never come clean about it, so when he did, it showed the representation of Mob’s power that perhaps things weren’t how they appeared.

And, of course, there’s everything surrounding Tsubome. While most high schoolers don’t have world-ending psychic power at their disposal, it can certainly feel like a crush on a girl is the most important thing in the world to even an ordinary teenage boy. While it may be a fantastical representation, Mob Psycho 100 managed to capture how it feels to be that age in a way that few works do. It’s also worth mentioning how well Mob takes his rejection, even after everything he’d been through. He doesn’t lash out in anger or rant and rave. It shows that Mob really does respect Tsubome as a person, and that’s likely why he’s given another chance in the epilogue scenes. All in all, it’s a rare portrayal of a teenage crush.

It’s not uncommon for anime series that have been very good to have disappointing endings, but Mob Psycho 100 has managed to stick the landing.
