MW2 & Warzone 2’s Armor-Piercing Bullets No Longer Live Up To Their Name
Armor-piercing ammunition was once very useful in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, but now these special bullets can’t pierce armor.
In a strange move, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 have removed the ability for armor-piercing ammunition to pierce armor. The first-person shooters were developed by Infinity Ward, with Warzone 2 serving as a free-to-play battle royale experience that ties into the world of MW2. These new Call of Duty titles have made some divisive design decisions, but the recent nerf to armor-piercing rounds is receiving particular backlash.
As reported by Kotaku, a recent patch for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 removed the armor-piercing ability of armor-piercing ammunition. As the name implies, the powerful ammo type was previously very effective at tearing through enemies wearing body armor. However, the new patch removes this quality and changes armor-piercing ammo to simply deal more damage to vehicles. Kotaku reports that fans are outraged, considering the name of the ammunition implies an effectiveness at piercing armor. Loading a weapon with armor-piercing ammo takes up an equipment slot, too, and this drawback now outweighs the niche advantage provided against vehicles.
Call Of Duty Forgets The Meaning Of “Armor-Piercing”
Before the removal of their namesake ability, armor-piercing rounds were considered an incredibly useful part of any player’s Warzone 2 loadout. These penetrating bullets proved particularly useful in Warzone 2’s DMZ mode, which equips all players with armored vests that can be improved by scavenging around their surroundings. Since virtually every enemy encountered in DMZ has armor of some type, armor-piercing rounds became a very popular tool to bring into any firefight. Now that armor-piercing rounds no longer pierce armor in Warzone 2, firefights in DMZ will likely begin lasting much longer.
While both recent Call of Duty titles have been a success, there have also been a number of controversial changes made to Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 gameplay. For example, various Gulag changes in Warzone 2 have overhauled the unique respawn mechanic to create a more cooperative and dynamic experience. Dying in Warzone 2 now pairs up two players, with this duo fighting another pair of fallen warriors for the chance to respawn. The new Gulag also includes a powerful minigun-wielding boss called the Jailer, with all four players earning their freedom if they manage to take him down. While many fans are intrigued by the cooperative mechanic, others prefer the free-for-all Gulag from the original Warzone.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 include various ways to customize weapons, with unique ammunition types having a large impact on battlefield performance. Armor-piercing ammunition was once a popular tool in both titles, particularly in Warzone 2’s DMZ mode. By removing the ability for armor-piercing bullets to pierce armor, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 patch makes the ammunition essentially worthless.
