Neil Gaiman has released new images of Crowley and Aziraphale from Good Omens’ upcoming season 2, but not quite in the way fans were expecting.

Neil Gaiman has released new images from Good Omens season 2, but not quite in the way fans expected. Based on the 1990 book of the same name written by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, Good Omens is a fantasy comedy series starring David Tennant (Crowley) and Michael Sheen (Aziraphale). The show was released in 2019 with the intention of being a limited series. However, due to massive popularity, Good Omens was renewed for season 2 in June 2021. Filming for season 2 began in October 2021 and wrapped this March. Consisting of six episodes, Good Omens season 2 is expected to premiere sometime in summer 2023, with a firm release date not yet set.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In a post to his Tumblr, Gaiman released new images of Crowley and Aziriphale in Good Omens season 2. However, as with a previous image of Crowley in season 2 that Gaiman posted, the pictures are slightly pixilated and distorted. The images show Crowley and Aziraphale in period clothing, wearing cloaks and top hats. Gaiman says that the images were screencaps taken on his phone when he was remotely co-editing the scene, and he was having technical difficulties. Check out the images below:

What We Know About Good Omens Season 2

The pixelated Good Omens season 2 images have become something of a running joke with Gaiman, who first posted a very glitchy image of Crowley earlier on December 11. Gaiman says the scenes coming into his phone “were pixilating badly that day,” and since then, fans have been asking for more images from Good Omens season 2, even if they’re distorted. Gaiman obliged by posting the slightly more clear images of Crowley and Aziraphale, though they’re still far from high-definition screencaps. While the images don’t give much away about the scene or about Good Omens season 2 in general, the costuming Tennant and Sheen are dressed in indicate that the new episodes will show Crowley and Aziraphale throughout their countless centuries on Earth.

While Good Omens season 1 was highly praised (and vocally hated by certain religious campaigns who petitioned for the show’s cancelation), many fans of the original book criticized the television adaptation for deviating from the book’s plot. However, with the season 1 finale more or less wrapping up the plot of the book, Good Omens season 2 may be a complete deviation from Gaiman and Pratchett’s novel altogether. In 2021, Gaiman revealed that he and Pratchett had planned to release a sequel novel to Good Omens, and that the plot of the unwritten book will be the basis for the story of season 2.

Though the plot of season 2 still remains a closely-guarded secret, major casting changes have been announced. While Tennant and Sheen will be reprising their leading characters, Benedict Cumberbatch (Satan) and Frances McDormand (God) will not be returning to their roles. However, season 1 actors Maggie Service, Nina Sosyana, Quelin Sepulveda and Miranda Richardson will be returning for season 2 – but not as their season 1 characters. It was also announced that Shelley Conn would be replacing Anna Maxwell Martin as Beelzebub. With big casting changes and an as-yet unknown plot, Good Omens season 2 promises to be something very different from what viewers came to expect from season 1.
