Unlike regular TCG cards, supporter cards feature human characters from the Pokémon games and anime. These characters aid in battle not through fighting, but by being pure “engines” – letting players draw, reshuffle, and recycle their cards. As such, all supporter cards can be a benefit in battle – but a few rise far above the rest.

Supporters that specialize in energy acceleration like Welder rarely come with such effective drawing abilities. That the card rewards players for using its main function makes it a very powerful tool, even without the context of a deck.
However, with the right deck, Welder can dominate competition. As TheDexLogs discusses in their video, Welder decks were featured in the Grand Finals of three international Pokémon TCG tournaments in 2019. Part of the reason for this is that players could use four Welder cards in one deck. In conjunction with powerful Fire-type Pokémon, four Welders could quickly charge strong Fire attacks and give players access to other useful cards in the deck. If it weren’t for its reliance on strong Fire-type Pokémon to function, Welder’s success rate alone would likely make it the best Pokémon TCG card of all time.
4 Pokémon Collector Has A Ridiculous Drawing Ability
Released in 2010’s HeartGold and SoulSilver set, Pokémon Collector became an instant classic because of its set-up ability. When using this supporter, players can choose any three basic cards from their deck and place them in their hand. Even great supporters rarely let players select which cards they draw from their decks, and they often come with specific restrictions for what types of cards can be drawn. As the Pokémon Collector lets any players draw any three Basic Pokémon makes it incredibly powerful, especially because strong V Pokémon can be brought into play with it.
Of course, Pokémon Collector released over a decade ago, so its usefulness in battle may not be familiar to younger players. However, those curious only need to look at the dominance Arceus VSTAR has had in the Pokémon TCG to get a sense of its power. The card’s ability “Starbirth” – which allows players to draw any two cards in their deck – made Arceus VSTAR the most prominent Pokémon of 2022. Considering that Pokémon Collector doesn’t need a build-up like Arceus VSTAR to work and draws three cards instead of two, it would be even more powerful if it were in play today.
3 Professor’s Research Is A Must-Have In Any Pokémon TCG Deck
Professor’s Research has a history as old as the Pokémon TCG. As Ptcgradio discusses in their video, this card was known as “Professor Oak” and was considered a Trainer Card in the Base Set. That all changed in 2010 and 2011, when Professor Juniper was released with the Black and White set. Since then, the Pokémon TCG‘s Professor’s Research cards have become a staple of the series. And because of their strength, they have also become a staple of nearly every deck for the last 13 years.
Professor’s Research allows players to discard their hand and draw seven new cards. Because of the amount of cards Professor’s Research draws up, players not only use it frequently but usually carry more than one per deck – almost no other supporter is as effective at giving players access to their cards. Professor’s Research is a thus must-have and one of the best of supporters of all time.
2 Marnie Punishes Opponents While Rewarding Players
Marnie quickly became one of the best Pokémon Sword and Shield cards when she first released. Usually, when supporter cards have an ability that punishes opponents, they don’t also come with another ability that rewards players. This is not true for Marnie: when she’s played, both players shuffle their hands and put them at the bottom of their decks, followed by the opponent drawing four cards and the player drawing five.
There is so much about Marnie that makes her a strong supporter. She disrupts opponents’ strategies; she gives players a card advantage; she makes opponents put their hands at the bottom of the deck where they may never be played again. There are a lot of powerful cards in the Pokémon TCGthat have similar effects, such as Judge or even N. But with Marnie, the versatility, disruption, and engine-like qualities of her card make her so much more of a threat. She’s most effective when used at the beginning of a battle, but in truth, she’s always powerful.
1 Lysandre’s Trump Card Was So Good It Was Banned
Several supporter cards have been banned in the Pokémon TCG due to their overwhelming strengths. Most of those cards have been reintegrated into play overtime due to balancing checks, but Lysandre’s Trump Card is so strong that its never been unbanned.
As its name suggests, Lysandre’s Trump Card basically trumps any strategy an opponent could use. This banned Pokémon TCG card forces both players to shuffle their discard piles back into their decks (save for itself), meaning it essentially resets the game each time it is played. There is a limit to how many times players can do this as they can only carry four of this card in any given deck. However, when used with VS Seeker, Lysandre’s Trump Card can be brought back into play, giving those who use it infinite cards to draw from.
Lysandre’s Trump Card released with the Phantom Forces set in 2014; by June 2015, it was banned from all Pokémon TCG tournaments. Other supporters may punish opponents, let players draw more cards, or even boost a particular Pokémon type. But by allowing players to keep drawing discarded cards infinitely, Lysandre’s Trump Card can quite literally do it all, making it the most powerful supporter in Pokémon TCGhistory.
