Red Dead Redemption 2: Every Member Of The Van Der Linde Gang Who Survive (& What Happens To Them)

[ad_1]

Despite being a four-year-old game at this point, Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to be endlessly replayable thanks to the depth and breadth of its storytelling which makes it stand out even now. Far more than just Arthur Morgan’s journey, the game tells a sweeping story that takes in all of the members of the Van Der Linde Gang.

Of course, the gang wasn’t to last in the end, with all the members ending up dead or going their separate ways by the conclusion of the game. Even those that survived the events of Red Dead Redemption 2 largely met their end by the events of the first game. This is what happened to the few lucky enough to escape that fate.

Sadie Adler Likely Moves To South America

Red Dead Redemption 2 Sadie Adler

Sadie steps up and becomes one of Arthur’s most capable allies towards the latter half of Red Dead Redemption 2 so she arguably deserved a relatively peaceful ending to her story. She’s also a member of the party who goes with John Marston to confront Micah in the game’s first epilogue, where she sustains a stab wound.

Sadie spends a period recovering at the ranch, with even Charles leaving before her. Eventually, however, she is well enough to say her farewell to the Marstons and depart from the ranch. It’s unknown what happened to her from there but it’s possible she did achieve her dream of winding up with a handsome revolutionary in South America.

Mary-Beth Gaskill Becomes A Successful Novelist

Mary Beth Gaskill looking down in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Mary-Beth Gaskill may be one of the most honest and kind members of the Van Der Linde Gang, but that didn’t stop her from being a more than competent criminal in her own right. The heart of the gang at times, she is one of the people Arthur is willing to confess his terminal illness to and her advice proves important to him.

That’s perhaps why her departure from the gang after it begins to fall apart hits Dutch hard. Luckily, it proves the right decision for her, as players can discover after beating the game by going to the train station in Valentine. It emerges that Mary-Beth is now a successful romance novelist and she even gives John a copy of one of her books.

Tilly Jackson Gets Married To A Wealthy Lawyer

Tilly Jackson in Red Dead Redemption 2's Epilogue

Red Dead Redemption 2‘s world is a harsh one to live in but Tilly stands as evidence that sweetness and empathy are still valuable traits as she became well-liked by the gang as well as by fans. In the epilogue, John can encounter her where it’s revealed that things are looking up for Tilly.

She reveals that she’s now married and goes by Tilly Pierre and elaborates later in a letter found on the dining table at Beecher’s Hope that her new husband is a lawyer from Haiti. Although she confesses to feeling like a fraud living in a fancy house surrounded by servants, many would say that Tilly was one of the most deserving to receive such good fortune.

Karen Jones Disappears Without A Trace

Few relish the life of crime more than Karen Jones, who seems to love using her acting skills to pull off a huge range of scams and heists. However, she’s not without her troubles, as evidenced by her drinking and an encounter with Sean after his rescue which ends with her leaving his tent unhappy.

By the time the gang moves to Beaver Holly, Karen’s drinking has worsened and she often clashes with other members of the camp before she eventually disappears when it falls apart. Whilst her fate isn’t certain, meaning she may have survived, Tilly is pessimistic and mentions in her letter that she strongly believes Karen to have drunk herself to death.

Simon Pearson Runs The General Store In Rhodes

Pearsons shop in Red Dead Redemption 2

Although not everyone’s favorite, Simon Pearson is a character many found they had an affinity with as the gang’s cheerful cook who enjoys nothing more than a good hunting mission with Arthur. Whilst he always tries to do what’s best for the group, he’s one of the first to recognize that the gang is collapsing and make his exit.

Luckily, for anyone worried things might not work out for him, Pearson can easily be found in the epilogue by heading to the General Store in Rhodes. There he will happily attempt to catch up with John, though this doesn’t please his wife who appears only as a disembodied voice. Overall, it’s clear that Pearson is doing a lot better though he has some regrets in regard to the gang.

Charles Smith Likely Moves North To Canada

Red Dead Redemption 2 has no shortage of memorable characters but few can be considered as memorable and well-liked as Charles Smith. Charles’ quiet nature disguises one of the gang’s most important members, but his strong moral compass seems to make him lose faith in it before he finally chooses to stay at the reservation rather than return to his former allies.

After burying the bodies of Arthur and Susan, Charles also helps John confront Micah in the epilogue and ends up getting shot in the process. Luckily, he’s able to recover from his injuries at the ranch before he finally departs. Though it’s unknown what happens to him from there, the popular theory is that he made his way up to Canada as he previously expressed an interest in moving there.

Orville Swanson Becomes A Minister In New York

The Reverend looks worse for wear in Red Dead Redemption 2

He may only be a minor figure in the gang but the resident drunken priest still formed an intriguing character in Red Dead Redemption 2. Given his obvious vices at the start of the game that ends up putting him in danger, it would be easy to assume the Reverend is heading for a dark ending.

However, he manages to achieve sobriety and is doing much better by the time the gang inevitably falls apart. In the epilogue, Charles tells John that Swanson had moved to New York. A newspaper article goes into even more detail, revealing that Swanson was now a minister at the First Congregational Church of New York, suggesting a positive conclusion to his story.

Josiah Trelawny Disappears Again

Josiah Trelawny looking serious in Red Dead Redemption.

It should be no surprise that the ever-evasive Josiah Trelawny found a way to survive whilst the Van Der Linde gang collapsed around him. Constantly appearing and reappearing, Josiah finally departs for good once it becomes obvious that the gang won’t survive for much longer.

As one of the few characters to have family outside of the gang, though he seems like a highly unreliable husband and father, it seems likely that he returned to them after the gang collapsed. Although nothing is known for sure, it’s hard to imagine Josiah ever ending up changing his ways in the end.
