Rick & Morty’s 70-Episode Order Not Expected To Be Cut Short

Rick and Morty is reportedly still expected to fulfill its 70-episode order from Adult Swim, despite the departure of co-creator Justin Roiland.

Rick & Morty will reportedly not cut short its original 70-episode order, despite the exit of its co-creator and main voice actor. Justin Roiland recently was let go from all his animated projects, including Rick and Morty, after being charged with domestic battery and false imprisonment. And just today, a bombshell report revealed that Roiland had in fact been largely uninvolved with the creative process on his shows even before his firings, and had essentially reduced his role on Rick and Morty to remotely-recorded vocal work.

These stunning Roiland developments indeed came just weeks after Rick and Morty wrapped up season 6, bringing it ten episodes closer to delivering on the 70-episode order it received back in 2018. It’s of course already been made clear that Rick and Morty will continue without Roiland in the fold, and now The Wrap reports that the show is expected to continue long enough to deliver the 40 episodes it still owes to Adult Swim.

Why Rick And Morty Is Better Off Without Justin Roiland

Details of Roiland’s behavior on Rick and Morty continue to surface in the wake of his criminal charges, including shocking reports of sexual harassment toward staff. Among other things, Roiland was accused of parading porn stars around the Rick and Morty studio, and bragging about his sexual exploits to the point of creating disgust. It’s also been reported that Roiland and the show’s co-creator Dan Harmon have not been on speaking terms for several years.

Rick and Morty has of course addressed rumors of the show’s behind-the-scenes strife via on-screen comedy, but now it appears the discord was much worse than the writers were letting on. It’s indeed clear now that Roiland was a more disruptive force than a creative one behind-the-scenes at Rick and Morty. Reportedly, things became especially bad during season 3, notable as the season when female writers were finally added to the Rick and Morty staff.

Despite his apparently disruptive and later utterly disengaged attitude toward creating Rick and Morty, Roiland undeniably remained a major part of the show’s success as the man behind the voices of the two main characters. Now the characters of Rick and Morty will have to be recast, a situation that clearly leaves the show in a pickle. But even with the difficulty of finding someone new to bring Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith to life, Rick & Morty is obviously better off without Roiland’s issues complicating the already difficult process of delivering episodes.
