Scorsese & DiCaprio’s Long-Awaited TV Show Loses Streaming Home

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s long-gestating show The Devil in the White City faces another setback with the loss of its streaming home. The Devil in the White City tells the true story of H.H. Holmes, the United States’ first serial killer, utilizing a hotel designed with traps to murder his victims. It will also focus on Daniel H. Burnham, the architect who designed the hotel amid the 1893 World’s Fair. Dicaprio has worked to adapt Erik Larson’s book of the same name since 2010, with Scorsese becoming involved in 2015. However, the project has been hit with several setbacks.

As reported by Deadline, The Devil in the White City has been hit with another setback, with the limited series now losing its planned home on Hulu. The series is intended to be eight episodes, with Scorsese and DiCaprio serving as executive producers. While it was not always planned as a streaming show, The Devil in the White City has been forced to adapt over the years it has spent in development hell, with ABC Signature now working to find the series a new streaming home.

Will Devil In The White City Ever Get Made?

The Devil in the White City is an ambitious project that likely comes with some budgetary concerns due to the time period in which it is set, which would involve recreating things like the 1893 World’s Fair, an integral part of the story. Despite Scorsese and DiCaprio championing the project, it has suffered several setbacks over its decade-plus gestation. The project was intended as a feature, with DiCaprio playing H.H. Holmes under Scorsese’s direction. However, that plan was scrapped, and they shifted the project to be a limited series.

When The Devil in the White City was turned into a television show, DiCaprio and Scorsese moved into executive producing roles, with the intention of bringing in a different director and lead actor. Keanu Reeves was attached to the project in the part of Burnham, the architect, but departed the project in October 2022. In addition, Todd Field, who is currently nominated for a Best Director Oscar for Tár, was on board to helm the series before leaving the project shortly after Reeves.

Now, with The Devil in the White City losing its planned streaming service, the project continues to limp along with an unknown future. While many may think a show from Scorsese and DiCaprio is a no-brainer, there has been enough hiccups surrounding the series to give any studio or streaming service cause for concern. Many of the issues with the series may boil down to budget or creative differences. However, The Devil in the White City will likely find a new home as long as Scorsese and DiCaprio continue pushing it forward.
