A new behind-the-scenes photo finds Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star, Simu Liu, on the floor after fighting with Andy Le’s Death Dealer.

Warning! SPOILERS ahead for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

A new behind-the-scenes photo finds Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star, Simu Liu, collapsed on the floor after the high-intensity Death Dealer fight. In terms of the pandemic-era box office, Shang-Chi is a triumph, with Marvel Studio’s latest film raking in almost $260 million worldwide. It smashed Labor Day records with a $90 million debut, and it held on with the best second weekend box office of any film during the pandemic. Shang-Chi features Liu in his breakout role as the titular character, comedian Awkwafina as his sidekick Katy, and returning Marvel actors like Benedict Wong and Sir Ben Kingsley.

After plenty of delays due to COVID-19, Phase 4 of the MCU kicked off with the long-awaited release of Black Widow. The movie came on the heels of Disney+’s first Marvel TV series; WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldierand LokiEach of the shows were highly praised by both fans and critics, and helped to pave the way for Marvel’s upcoming film debuts. Marvel’s latest feature follows the origin story of Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu. Raised by an overbearing gang-boss father, Shang-Chi flees his father’s watchful eye in China to start a new life in San Francisco. But once his misguided father recruits Shang-Chi and his sister Xialing for a devious mission into the mythical village of Ta Lo, Shang-Chi must come face-to-face with his past.

In a new behind-the-scenes photo posted to Instagram by Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton, Simu Liu is seen taking a break after fighting with martial artist Andy Le. The Vietnamese-American actor made his big-screen debut playing Death Dealer, the masked assassin recruited by Shang-Chi’s father. Apparently, their hand-to-hand combat scenes left Liu exhausted, who was photographed after he collapsed on the floor due to what was presumably an incredibly intense scene. Cretton captioned the photo, “@simuliu between takes of the Death Dealer knife fight w/ @andyle_official.” Check out the image below:

Shang-Chi is packed with various disciplines of Chinese martial arts, and according to other behind-the-scenes photos and videos posted by the cast and crew, made for some insanely tough fight scenes. Much of the film’s action sequences are choreographed by stunt veterans Peng Zhang, Guillermo Grispo, and Andy Cheng, who was once a Jackie Chan Stunt Team member. Liu has an impressive background in Taekwondo, Wing Chun, and gymnastics, and did the majority of his stunts in Shang-Chi. But it’s no wonder Liu was worn-out while filming, especially after preforming stunts like swinging over of a city bus. According to Liu, the iconic bus scene took a whopping four full weeks to shoot.

Not only is Shang-Chi a triumph in the superhero genre, but also a huge milestone for Asian representation on-screen. The overwhelmingly positive reception of the film has fans already speculating about Shang-Chi 2, which was more or less confirmed in the film’s end credits. Regardless, those Shang-Chi post-credits scenes certainly set the stage for next year’s major MCU release, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessAs of now, it’s hard to tell where and when some of the characters will recur in future MCU films. But fans of Shang-Chi can certainly anticipate seeing much more of the superhero in the future, in an eventual Shang-Chi sequel, or perhaps something completely different.
