She-Hulk Exposes Tony Stark’s Biggest Flaw

A confrontation between Iron Man and She-Hulk reveals Tony’s greatest flaw – and it costs him dearly in his new series.

Warning: SPOILERS for Invincible Iron Man #1Marvel’s She-Hulk has finally discovered Iron Man’s biggest flaw – a flaw that almost destroys him in the first issue of his new series. Jennifer Walters and Tony Stark have known each other for years as colleagues, friends and fellow Avengers; both superheroes often fight alongside one another during world-ending events. But in Invincible Iron Man #1, Walters discovers that Tony is his own worst enemy, and it will eventually kill him.

In current comics continuity, Iron Man is almost completely broke. In an effort to destroy the weapons-dealing company Source Control, Tony Stark saw fit to buy every single exotic weapon in their warehouse. The end result is a Tony Stark with a massive arsenal of weapons and an empty bank account (but his true target, the Ten Rings, escaped his grasp; they are controlled by Riri Williams, Ironheart). Completely bankrupt, Stark is forced to “downsize” by living in a brownstone building – but this building is soon destroyed in a freak accident.

In Invincible Iron Man #1, written by Gerry Duggan with art by Juan Frigeri, the explosion and destruction of Tony Stark’s house has injured multiple neighbors, and one woman has died. Stricken with grief, Tony instructs his lawyer Jennifer Walters to pay off everyone claiming damages in the explosion, even though She-Hulk protests that some neighbors weren’t even in the city when the disaster occurred. “Dammit, Jen, pay them all off!” Tony shouts before quickly apologizing. “No, it’s refreshing to get yelled at by a client,” says Walters. “Nobody does that anymore.”

She-Hulk Proves Tony Stark Has Lost All Control

In many ways, both characters are complete opposites when it comes to their temper and sense of control. While Jennifer Walters has Hulk powers, she rarely, if ever, loses control while using them; she is also a lawyer who must compose herself while defending her superpowered clients. Iron Man, meanwhile, barely keeps his abilities under control; they may not be conventional superpowers, but his genius-level intellect often gets in his own way (and in the recent 2022 Christopher Cantwell series, resulted in calamity as he gave his own intelligence to every citizen in New York, nearly destroying the city in the process).

Yelling at She-Hulk in an attempt to provoke her anger proves Tony has horrific self-destructive tendencies. He also lacks control over his own temper and powers, in stark contrast to Walters. While Iron Man is often considered a model superhero and a key member of the Avengers, he is frequently his own worst enemy – and he needs serious help to curb his near-addiction to putting himself in harm’s way, again and again.
