Sonic Can’t Win Any Major Battles Without Dr. Eggman’s Help

For the second time in IDW Publishing’s series, Sonic the Hedgehog has no choice but to work with Dr. Eggman to defeat a common threat.

Warning: Spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog #55The latest threat in IDW Publishing’s Sonic the Hedgehog series is proving that the Blue Blur seemingly can’t win without his nemesis Dr. Eggman by his side.

The latest of these team-ups just occurred in Sonic the Hedgehog #55 by story writer Evan Stanley, artist Adam Bryce Thomas, colorist Reggie Graham and letterer Shawn Lee. The issue sees Sonic’s evil cyborg replacement Surge the Tenrec getting increasingly more unstable as she consumes more energy with Eggman’s so-called Dynamo Cage. Meanwhile, Sonic and Tails realize that it would be wise to ally themselves with Dr. Eggman since Surge is their priority and battling both Surge and Eggman would be problematic.

Sonic Has Had to Work with Dr. Eggman Before

Sonic and Tails agree to ally themselves with Dr. Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog 55

Ever since the series began, there have only been three major story arcs that have spawned epic, multiple issue battles. One of them transpired when Dr. Eggman believed that he was a good guy named Mr. Tinker and therefore didn’t involve himself in the matter, forcing Sonic to only rely on his friends. The other two, however, did involve Eggman when he was no longer confused and very much evil. And in each of these cases, Sonic has had to ally himself with his worst enemy when things have gotten too much out of hand.

The first time that Sonic and Tails form a temporary alliance with Dr. Eggman occurs when the evil scientist loses control of his Metal Virus that turns lifeforms into metallic zombies or Zombots. The evil scientist’s old nemeses – the Deadly Six – take advantage of the ensuing chaos to control the Zombots in order to dominate Sonic’s world, including Eggman. Because Sonic is slowly turning into a Zombot himself, the hedgehog needs as much help all the help he can get (even from Dr. Eggman). It ends up being Eggman who comes up with the idea of combining the power of Super Sonic with his assistant Dr. Starline’s Warp Topaz to save their world. Although Sonic, along with his ally Silver the Hedgehog, ultimately do all the work themselves and win, they only succeed because they follow Dr. Eggman’s ingenious plan. In other words, Sonic and his friends wouldn’t have been able to win if it weren’t for their temporary truce with Eggman. And it isn’t like the normal genius on Sonic’s team, Tails, doesn’t come up with a winning strategy. He does devise a plan, but he just accidently loses the antidote that would cure Sonic and thus allow Sonic and Silver to save the day on their own without Eggman’s help.

Of course, Sonic and Eggman’s current battle against Surge can still go either way. The rivals’ latest team-up might not result in the defeat of Sonic’s evil cyborg replacement and will therefore not prove that the only way that Sonic can win against her is with Eggman. But what can be proven definitively is that Sonic has no other choice but to ally himself with his rival Dr. Eggman at this moment because it will greatly improve his chances against Surge. If he doesn’t then Sonic runs the risk of having to fight against not only Surge but Dr. Eggman as well – and he can’t handle that.
