Warning: SPOILERS for The Amazing Spider-Man #20The romance between Peter Parker and Mary Jane is officially over, and the confirmation comes from Spider-Man‘s own words. After a lot of ups and downs, Marvel shuts down any hopes that this beloved couple can back together anytime soon.

In The Amazing Spider-Man #20, by Joe Kelly, Terry Dodson, and Rachel Dodson, Peter and Felicia Hardy (Black Cat), who are currently dating, are trying to enjoy a weekend away in a retreat in Upstate New York, when they get caught in the White Rabbit’s latest scheme: renting supervillain weapons to young tech entrepreneurs to spice up their corporate retreats. The real drama, however, is that Mary Jane and her new partner Paul also booked the same spa, which forces Peter to confront his feelings for MJ. Pushed by Felicia, Peter admits that he still loves Mary Jane, but not in a romantic sense. She will always be an important part of his life, but that’s all.

Marvel Crushes All Hopes Of Seeing Peter And MJ Back Together Son

Spider-Man tells Black Cat he does not love MJ anymore

Mary Jane became Peter’s girlfriend after his first love, Gwen Stacy, tragically died. Their relationship steadily grew and developed, even after Mary Jane found out that Peter is Spider-Man. Finally, the two married in the classic The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21. Their marriage survived a lot of hardships, until the infamous One More Day event, when Peter made a deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May’s life, in exchange for his marriage. The Demon Lord retconned history so that Peter failed to show up on the day of the wedding, and as a result, his relationship with MJ became more and more strained, until the two broke up. Many years later, Marvel decided to bring back MJ into Peter’s life and the two started dating again.

Then, with no explanation, the first issue of the current The Amazing Spider-Man series saw not only Peter and Mary Jane separated once again, but also the woman in a brand new relationship, and with kids (they probably are her new partner’s kids, but it still has to be explained). Since then, Peter has shown signs of being obsessed with MJ and has even been accused of being a stalker, but his words to Felicia sound like the death knell for what was once Marvel’s most iconic couple. Many Spider-Man fans will not take this well, as they see Peter and MJ’s struggles as a sign of how Marvel keeps messing with the character, constantly pushing him back to square one every time his life seems to be on the right track.

Peter Doesn’t Love Mary Jane Anymore

The One More Day retcon is one of the most hated in the history of comics, so it’s understandable that many fans still hold hope to see it undone and Peter and MJ once again together as a happy couple. However, it’s clear that Marvel is going in the opposite direction. Spider-Man‘s new fling with Black Cat has become a lot more serious than expected, and this latest story seems to push Mary Jane out of the picture, proving that her romance with Peter is really over (for now).
