Spider-Verse 2 Concept Art Shows Spider-Man’s Daughter & New Characters
Following the release of the trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller unveiled surprise character art.
Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller reveal concept art for new characters in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Sony and Marvel hit it big with the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which took the famous wall-crawling hero Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and put him into animation for a super stylized adventure. The Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer recently unveiled characters such as Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), and Spider-Woman (Issa Rae). Beyond the main players, there are several flyby cameos that will no doubt pepper the new film and excite audiences.
After the release of the trailer, Sony Pictures Entertainment held an aftershow for YouTube Premium members that featured producers Lord and Miller, as well as the voice of Gwen Stacy, Hailee Steinfeld, and discussed what’s to come for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The aftershow offered the first look at three unique characters: Mayday Parker, the infant daughter of Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) and Mary Jane Watson (Zoë Kravitz); Hobie Brown (Daniel Kaluuya), a British superhero known as Spider-Punk; and Spider-Man India, a variant of the character who hails from Mumbattan, a combination of Mumbai and Manhattan. What Role Will The New Characters Play?
Lord and Miller went into more detail about each character unveiled in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer and the concept art. They explained that Spider-Punk has a close bond with Gwen due to the fact that they are musicians, and that Kaluuya is “bringing his Camden” to the role. Their friendship emerges over the fact that Gwen wears a new pair of shoes that Spider-Punk gets her, and Miles will be slightly jealous of their comradery. Lord and Miller also explained that Jessica Drew’s role will be that of a mentor figure to Gwen, similar to the bond shared between Peter and Miles, despite the fact that this iteration will be sporting a pregnant belly and have a hard time teaching her new protégé.
The biggest reveal comes from the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer, which depicted Peter wearing a Baby Bjorn. Lord and Miller responded by discussing the existence of his daughter May “Mayday” Parker, who is described as having “half spider blood in her” and “spider stuff going on.” This is accurate to her depiction in the comics, where an alternate future depicts her taking on the mantle of Spider-Girl following Peter’s retirement. It is possible that the Spider-Verse film series is setting up for this eventual transformation of the character.
How Peter B. Parker’s Daughter Changes The Character
Knowing that Peter and Mary Jane get back together and now have a daughter makes the ending for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse all the more uplifting. In the first movie, Peter wasn’t interested in kids, but his bond with Miles suggested he’d changed his mind by the end. This new development also shows that besides Miles and Spider-Gwen’s character arcs, Peter will have more growth in the sequel as well as he tries to juggle being a superhero and a dad, something the comics had always teased, but never fully committed to. There are still plenty of surprises left to be had in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and definitely more variants that will surprise and delight fans.
