Star Trek: Picard season 2 was an epic time-travel adventure that brought back TNG‘s Q (John de Lancie) and Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) as well as the Borg Queen (Annie Wersching). Picard and his motley crew had to journey back to 2024 Los Angeles to set the timeline right after Q’s meddling created a dark future ruled by the authoritarian Confederation of Earth. But Star Trek: Picard season 2’s true goal was to delve into the unanswered questions about Jean-Luc himself and reveal why the Starfleet legend chose to remain alone without a romantic partner his entire life.

Excitingly, Star Trek: Picard season 3 is bringing back Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, and Gates McFadden as their Star Trek: The Next Generation characters. This will mark the long-awaited returns of Worf, Geordi La Forge, and Dr. Beverly Crusher, although Wil Wheaton will not reprise Wesley Crusher in season 3. The plan is to give all the TNG characters returning in Picard season 3 a deserving sendoff, but this also hopefully means the former crew of the USS Enterprise-D will team up with Jean-Luc’s motley crew.

Picard Toast Finale

Star Trek: Picard‘s producers indicated that each season is a self-contained chapter, but Picard season 2 left behind major plot threads that presumably set up season 3. Back in 2024 Los Angeles, Dr. Adam Soong (Brent Spiner) revealed a top-secret folder labeled “Project Khan,” which hints at the evil eugenicist potentially turning himself into a genetically-engineered supervillain in Star Trek: Picard season 3. Soong could also be the mysterious threat who created a transwarp conduit that the benevolent Borg Queen has volunteered to guard. At the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, Patrick Stewart also revealed that Star Trek: Picard season 3 will take the cast members back to the Enterprise (but potentially the Enterprise-F, canonizing a version of the ship from the game Star Trek: Online). The season was also confirmed to have a singular female villain, Vadic, and a story inspired by Wrath of Khan that sees the crew scattered across the universe.

The Star Trek: Picard season 3 trailer features some bombastic fight sequences, along with a first glimpse of the new female villain Vadic. From what can be gathered from the trailer, it seems as though there could be a traitor in Picard’s midst, as he’s told to “trust no one.” In addition, first looks at the cast from The Next Generation prove to be particularly exciting, as it means the old team is joining forces once again. Audiences will have to wait just a few short weeks to find out what this revenge the new villain Vadic speaks of is pertaining to, but it’s sure to be a thrilling adventure to close out the beloved Star Trek show.

Picard Season 3 Will Pave The Way For More Spinoffs

Star Trek Picard and TNG Crew

Star Trek: Picard season 3 promises to be a huge event, but should also set up some Star Trek: Picard spinoff series that are equally exciting. Executive producer Alex Kurtzman teased at the SDCC 2022 Star Trek panel that audiences “can expect more Star Trek shows with female leads” (via GamesRadar). While not much more is known about these projects, it’s exciting to have confirmation that Star Trek: Picard season 3 won’t be the last time audiences get to enjoy the series’ captivating world.
