Stop Comparing Batman: Arkham Knight With Gotham Knights

Gotham Knights can hold its own visually, but it sacrificed graphics and performance in order to create an immersive Gotham City experience.


It might not be surprising that Gotham Knights is being compared to other games in the franchise, but those comparisons might not be fair given the mechanical differences. Batman: Arkham Knight has beautiful visuals and smooth gameplay, but it’s difficult to compare it with Gotham Knights when looking at visuals alone. Unlike previous Batman games, Gotham Knights has a lot more features to handle, and that can take away from graphics and performance.


Arkham Knight is a game that is more streamlined and focused on a single-player story compared to Gotham Knights. Not only does Gotham Knights feature multiplayer as an option, it also has the largest map of any Batman game. Both of these can bring with them limitations to Gotham Knights’ performance ability, and they aren’t the only extra elements the game features.

Gotham Knights Sacrifices Performance For Content

Gotham Knights has an open-world map, interior settings, the Belfry, and multiple playable characters who each have different story elements, such as different scenes that play in the Court of Owls’ labyrinth. However, the performance sacrifice isn’t significant enough to say that Gotham Knights is lacking, since its visuals have their own merit. It features new lighting techniques, detailed character models, Batcycles, and customization options for outfits and weapons.

Not only is this the biggest map for a Batman game, but Gotham Knights’ open world will evolve as the story progress, which adds another layer of realism that not every game can claim to have. This means that Gotham Knights has another layer of detail that could detract from the game’s overall performance in order to implement it. Yet, Gotham Knights’ world features even more complexity with day and night cycles that feature villain events and stories that take place over several cycles to create a truly immersive experience for players taking on the role of a member of the Bat Family.

Some players might be unhappy with Gotham Knights 30 FPS performance cap, but it seems that the decision to add that cap was for the sake of a smoother performance in a game that has a lot to juggle even on current-gen systems. Because Gotham Knights is bigger in terms of size and has more features to handle at any one time given the inclusion of a living map, comparing it to Arkham Knight isn’t fair when looking at graphics and performance alone. Arkham Knight might have better performance and visuals, but Gotham Knights is beautiful in its own right, and both games bring their own strengths to the franchise.
