Stranger Things 4 Hinted At Will’s Sexuality In Its Opening Minutes

Will’s sexuality was a major point of character development for him in season 4, but it was hinted at in an easter egg in season 4’s opening minutes.

Stranger Things season 4 implied that Will Byers had romantic feelings for his best friend Mike, but an Easter egg in the first episode of Stranger Things season 4 reveals Will’s sexuality. While there were many intertwining plots, seeing Will understand his sexuality was one of the more grounded aspects of the action-packed season 4. Audiences still haven’t seen Will officially come out or openly discuss his sexuality, but it is implied that he is gay, and even Jonathan noticed the way he looked at Mike when he came to visit in California.

There have been other subtle hints that Will liked Mike as more than a friend in Stranger Things seasons 2 and 3. However, season 4 was the first time it was more of a plot point and properly part of Will’s character development. When looking back on earlier seasons, the Duffer Brothers did an excellent job making Will’s understanding of his sexuality and his feelings towards Mike seem very real. Audiences get to see Will’s evolution, and while he still may not accept that part of himself right now, hopefully, he will in Stranger Things season 5.

Will’s School Project In Stranger Things Season 4 Hinted That He’s Gay

In Stranger Things season 4, episode 1, Will and Eleven have presentations to give at school. Eleven’s got a lot of attention because it’s about Jim Hopper (who Eleven thought was dead), but Will’s project was on Alan Turing. Turing was one of the world’s greatest codebreakers but was also convicted of being gay, which was outlawed. Turing was later pardoned, and laws allowing past victims of the justice system to be pardoned are unofficially called the Alan Turing Law. So while Turing may be an intellectual hero for Will, he may also connect with him on a different level.

It’s unknown if Will did his school project on Turing because of his sexuality, but it was an incredible Easter egg by the Duffer Brothers to include to hint for Will’s journey in Stranger Things season 4. While Will may connect with Turing because of his sexuality, the Easter egg could also imply that Will is the perfect codebreaker for Vecna. He already has a connection to him and the upside down, and even though it didn’t work in Stranger Things season 2, Will can now get vital intel on Vecna that will help his friends.

Stranger Things 5 Must Resolve Will’s Feelings For Mike Properly

Additionally, for Stranger Things’ fifth and final season to properly wrap up Will Byers’ story, he has to resolve his feelings. Whether it be admitting them to Mike or meeting someone new, Will deserves a happy ending. Since Mike still seems to be very much in love with Eleven, he probably won’t reciprocate Will’s feelings, but hopefully, Mike will support his best friend, even if he doesn’t have feelings for him. After all of the crazy and horrible things that have happened to Will throughout Stranger Things’ 4 seasons, Will deserves to have something good.

Will’s school project on Alan Turing is a great subtle detail that the Duffer Brothers added to hint at Will’s sexuality and character development in Stranger Things season 4. It was so good that audiences may even start looking for other subtle clues, not just for Will’s sexuality but also for other characters. It will be exciting to see Will’s journey in Stranger Things season 5, but hopefully, it can help resolve Will’s romantic feelings towards Mike.
