Stranger Things Creators Use Hopper’s Season 5 Ending To Mess With Star

Stranger Things star David Harbour reveals that showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer tease him about potentially changing Hopper’s season 5 ending when he gets overly confident about knowing what will happen to his character. With Stranger Things season 4’s release earlier this year, the series continued its trend of breaking Netflix records while earning critical acclaim and 13 Emmy nominations. The season is Harbour’s most intense yet, following the captured Hopper as he attempts to escape two soviet institutions and reunite with his adopted daughter Eleven. Although they reunite in Hawkins, they now have to face the encroachment of the Upside Down on their own world.

Harbour recently visited Jimmy Kimmel Live and revealed he knows how Hopper’s story will end in Stranger Things season 5, before quickly explaining that the Duffer brothers threaten to go off course with their originally planned ending just to mess with the star when he gets too confident speaking on the show. What this planned arc actually entails isn’t revealed at all by Harbour, though, as he humorously explains, the star and fans alike are at the mercy of the Duffers when it comes to finding out Hopper’s eventual fate. I know everything… It’s funny, I’ve said this in interviews before. Immediately after, I get a text from Matt and Ross Duffer saying: “Oh, so you know everything?” … I mean we sort of arched out a thing years ago, that once the show got a second season, we figured out what the arc would be of this guy and where it would go. That’s what I’ve been working with. So theoretically I know what the end of the show is. But they, you know, like to mess with me and say maybe I don’t.

How Stranger Things Season 5 Could End For Hopper

As funny as Harbour’s anecdote may be, the playfulness shared between the star and the creators of Stranger Things, regarding the fate of one of the series’ most beloved heroes, will only add to the tense anticipation among fans for the release of season 5. Hopper has been a constant figure throughout the series, his own arc thus far impressively developing him from broken yet capable small town sheriff, to the demon slaying father figure of a super-powered teen. Considering that Stranger Things season 3’s ending already played the sacrifice card with Hoppe’s death fakeout, it seems unlikely (yet still possible) that his arc would end in tragedy.

Surely, the ending for Hopper that most are hoping for will see the lovable protagonist finally settling down in peace with Joyce and Eleven. If he were to be granted such a happy ending, these three could become the family so tragically absent in Hopper’s life at the beginning of Stranger Things. Of course, this is assuming that the season is also kind to other characters, and with the likelihood of Vecna and the Mind Flayer returning to haunt Hawkins for a final time, Hopper is at risk of facing even more devastating losses in Stranger Things season 5.

Considering Hopper’s arc is now at the point where fans have been treated to seeing him literally decapitate a Demogorgan with a great sword, its obvious the hero won’t be going down without a fight and Stranger Things season 5 has a great deal to live up to in the action department. With the Upside Down and Hawkins melding together, this shouldn’t be a problem. Considering Hopper will be by Eleven’s side from the very start of the season this time round, they will face it all together.
