Supernatural: 10 Sam Winchester Plot Holes That Were Never Resolved

[ad_1]

The Winchesters will continue to bring back connections to Supernatural with the return of Henry Winchester actor Gil McKinney to the prequel. It’s not known if Sam Winchester will be brought back in some way, but fans might like the idea if it offers explanations for certain plot holes around the character.

Inconsistencies with established logic and the plot concerning Sam range from the arc surrounding his time in Hell to the sudden absence of his taste for demon blood without explanation. Although Supernatural has been over for years, fans would still love some clarity to these plot holes that no doubt continue to confuse them.

What Happened To The French Mistake Universe Sam?

The last season of Supernatural confirmed that every alternate-world character was a variant of the prime universe person. This meant that the actor who played Sam in the “French Mistake” world was another version of the character who should have been present when Sam and Dean arrived.

However, this variant was never seen, and it appeared that Sam had simply replaced him. It’s a plot hole for Dean in Supernatural as well, as his variant didn’t show up either. Sam would later encounter another variant of his without either one replacing the other, so it’s unclear why the “French Mistake” version didn’t show up.

Why Didn’t Sam Stay In Touch With His College Friends?

Sam repeatedly claimed that he wasn’t going to let go of his college friends even when he was traveling with Dean; he was shown at one point texting them. Sam continued to harbor hopes of returning to a normal life, which clashes with the disappearance of his college friends.

After all, his friends were the only link he had to the normal life he craved, making the idea that he cut them off hard to believe. Although it was later revealed that Azazel had planted a lot of demons to pose as Sam’s friends, this revelation came half a decade after Sam had already ceased contact with them.

How Did Sam Avoid Being Contaminated From The Leviathans’ Food?

Sam and Dean learned that the Leviathans had contaminated the food supply to make people dumber and easy for them to consume. While Dean was sent to Purgatory after killing Dick Roman, Sam had to have dealt with the problem of not being able to eat processed food.

However, flashbacks set during Dean’s absence showed Sam eating without any problems even though the contaminated food distribution had been on a national level. Based on the events, Sam should have either succumbed to the tainted food or avoided eating it, but he wasn’t seen doing either.

How Did Sam’s Body Exist In Hell?

Sam Winchester in Supernatural

Sam is easily among the best characters in Supernatural for his heroics, with the greatest display when he jumped into Lucifer’s Cage to save humanity. Castiel somehow brought Sam’s body back but left his soul, which shouldn’t have been possible.

Since Sam’s body supposedly wasn’t inhabited at the time, it should have been destroyed while his soul spent over a century in Hell being tortured by Michael and Lucifer. This was set prior to Crowley’s redesign of Hell, with Ruby having mentioned that the realm was perpetually on fire. Going by that, Sam’s body being untouched is a plot hole that doesn’t have any explanation.

How Did Sam’s Bloodlust Disappear Without Issue?

Sam’s lust for demon blood was an important arc for two seasons, to the point where he went off the rails when he was affected by Famine’s curse. This aspect was a big problem before he went to Hell, only for Sam to somehow get over it after he returned.

It wasn’t explained how Sam wasn’t affected by the need to consume demon blood, nor did he mention any attempts to control it. Considering he’d resorted to hallucinating when he didn’t have the demon blood at one point, it’s a wonder how he didn’t have the same issues afterward.

Why Didn’t Sam Reunite With Alternate Dean After His Brother’s Demise?

Alternate Sam and Dean clink beer bottles in Supernatural

Not seeking out the Alternate Dean is definitely not one of Sam’s best decisions in Supernatural since he ended up spending his life mourning his brother. As it was, the Dean variant was still alive, and with the Sam variant somewhere on Earth, which means that Sam could have just met them.

Although this version of Dean wasn’t the same as the prime universe one, he was still close enough for Sam to connect with him. It didn’t make sense why Sam spent decades feeling lonely when he had a variant of his brother that he could form a bond with, especially when he knew where this Dean was.

Why Didn’t Sam Become Evil After His Resurrection?

John had informed Dean that Sam would become evil one day and this seemed to come to pass after the latter was resurrected – Azazel even mentioned this to Dean. Apart from shooting Jake in cold blood, though, there was never any hint of Sam turning evil.

In fact, Sam became a lot nicer after he came back to life, losing his rebellious attitude and willingly traveling with Dean. Even when Sam was manipulated by Ruby to consume demon blood, Sam had done so with the express intention of saving people’s lives rather than for personal gain. All this leaves the plot point of his evil turn unresolved.

Why Didn’t Sam Remember Adam In The Cage?

The decision to leave his own brother in Hell is something about Sam that has aged poorly in Supernatural, mainly because he’d spent over a century in there with him. Sam regained his memories of Hell after the wall in his mind broke, which should have let him recall that Adam was still alive there.

However, after Adam was released, Sam appeared to be surprised that he still had a functioning mind of his own despite Michael’s possession. Sam also claimed he and Dean hadn’t helped Adam because they weren’t sure of what state he was in, which is also a plot hole since he’d been present in the cage with Adam for a long time.

Why Didn’t Sam Perish When He Cured Dean From Being A Demon?

Sam was on the fringes of death after nearly completing the third trial to seal Hell, which involved curing a demon. Dean ended up convincing him to change his mind to save Sam’s life, but the trial itself was still technically pending.

Over a year later, Sam then cured Dean when his brother was a demon, which is when Sam should have died. But not only did that not come to pass, but Hell wasn’t sealed either. There was never any mention of a time-lapse condition that invalidated Sam’s trials, so it’s a plot hole regarding why curing Demon Dean didn’t complete the intended spell.

Why Was Azazel Fine With Sam’s Death If He Was Lucifer’s Vessel?

Azazel smiles in Supernatural

This is easily one of the biggest question marks in the series since Azazel and Lucifer’s entire plan for the apocalypse hinged on the devil’s possession of Sam. After Sam was killed by Jake, Azazel simply shrugged it off and picked Jake as the person for his task.

Azazel had no clue that Dean would sell his soul to bring Sam back, meaning he should have actually been angered at Sam’s death. All of Azazel’s master plan relied on Sam being in the position to consent to Lucifer’s possession, which wasn’t possible if he was dead.
