Sylvester Stallone Shares Moving Rocky IV Director’s Cut Making-Of Video

Sylvester Stallone shares moving Rocky IV Director’s Cut making-of video ahead of the November 11th debut of the film and says more content is coming.

Sylvester Stallone has shared a new making-of video for his Rocky IV Director’s Cut. Rocky IV was originally released in 1985 and stands as the highest-grossing of the Rocky series to date. Directed by and starring Stallone, the film also stars Carl Weathers as Apollo Creed, Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago, Burt Young as Paulie, Talia Shire as Adrian, and Tony Burton as Duke.

Stallone decided to recut the film earlier this year and has shared snippets of that process on his Instagram, as well as clips of new footage and behind-the-scenes work and insight into that process. The actor/director recently completed the re-edit, which is primed to debut in theaters for a one-night-only event via Fathom Events on November 11th, before being available on-demand. So far, new posters and trailers for Rocky IV: Director’s Cut have been shared for the re-cut version of the film, which is said to feature more than 40 minutes of never-before-seen footage.

Today, Stallone took to Instagram yet again to hype up the Rocky IV Director’s Cut, and has since shared a behind-the-scenes video that chronicles the re-editing process of the film, put together (and shot on an iPhone) by director John Herzfeld. The video follows has some candid and moving commentary as Stallone discusses the process of re-editing the film, the mechanization of what drives the character of Rocky, as well as how Stallone’s own disability helped him to become a better actor. The video also features a number of never-before-seen clips from the film interspersed throughout. Stallone says that MGM has put together a number of interesting clips that will be released shortly, warning everyone to “get ready to be bombarded.” Click below to see the making-of video and content tease videos below:

Stallone may have spent the summer working on the re-edit of Rocky IV, but he’s also kept busy on other projects as well. He recently finished the superhero film The Samaritan, which showed off the first trailer earlier this year at CinemaCon and is slated for an August 26th, 2022 release. The actor was also just in London to film his part in The Expendables 4 with Jason Statham and Megan Fox and is in pre-production on an action/sci-fi film called Little America. The actor has since retired from the role of Rocky Balboa, however, having last appeared in the spinoff Creed II, which he said would be his last appearance as the character, passing the torch to star Michael B. Jordan, who will star in and direct Creed III for release in 2022.

The hype surrounding the re-release of Rocky IV in its new re-cut form is nothing to scoff at, considering that it’s the biggest pre-sale event for Fathom Events since 2019 — and that’s for a 36-year-old film. The appeal of Rocky, especially for Rocky IV, which is often cited as the fan-favorite of the series, has lasted for decades and with this new release it could extend that life even further. While some may lament some of the changes in the new cut (bye-bye to Cico the Robot) or even have issues with the way it’s recut, there’s no denying the strong curiosity to see what Stallone has done with arguably his most-popular Rocky film.
