The 15 Coolest Fire-Type Pokémon, Ranked

[ad_1]

Fire-types are very well-represented in almost every region (except for the Sinnoh region, in Diamond & Pearl, at least). As one of the three starting types, Fire has a wide range of Pokémon in its ranks making the type as dynamic and diverse as any other. Design-wise, Fire-types immediately stand out either because of their brightly colored patterns or the literal flames that stick out of their bodies.

“Cool” isn’t a word that might fit Fire-types as they’re literally quite the opposite. Still, the sentiment remains and there are some truly sensational fiery Pokémon. Whether because of their ideal type combinations or simply because they’re well-designed, these creatures stand out as some of the best examples of how blazing Fire-types can be.

Updated on October 22nd, 2021 by Quinn Levandoski: While every monster type has its fair share of fans, the best fire-type Pokémon continue to amass a considerable following. While these creatures were once largely relegated to the realm of offensive threats, recent generations have seen Game Freak and The Pokemon Company expand fire types’ design space to include representatives for every design niche.

The fact that there are so many fan-favorite creatures even outside of the fifteen best fire-type Pokémon is a testament to the care that has gone into their creation. Whether they’re good in battle, showcase a solid visual design, or possess an impressive move pool, many of these Pokémon find a spot on trainer rosters, from the relaxingly casual to the highly competitive.

15 Volcanion

Volcanion from Pokemon

Mythical Pokémon are so rare that the vast majority of people doubt their existence. Volcanion lives in mountains uninhabited by men and mainly uses steam to protect itself and attack others.

Volcanion seems to be based on the idea of geysers and steam-powered engines, and its Fire/Water split makes it one of the best dual-type fire Pokémon to try out. So far, this elusive Pokémon has only been available in Generation VI events. The last Pokémon in the Kalos Pokédex, Volcanion remains one of the most mysterious and slippery creatures in the franchise.

14 Alolan Marowak

Pokemon Shiny Alolan Marowak

Regional variants are one of the franchise’s most inspired and successful gimmicks. They allow players to rediscover beloved classic Pokémon, injecting them with new life in the process. Marowak, a Pokémon with one of the scariest design backstories, got the regional variant treatment in Generation VII becoming a dual-type Fire/Ghost.

Ferocious and violent, Alolan Marowak became a Fire-type to defend itself against the Grass Pokémon that preyed on it as a Ground-type. Alolans feared it as a conjurer due to the unique dance it does with its elongated, fiery bone.

13 Coalossal

One of Generation VIII’s most original designs, Colossal is a kaiju-inspired beast with a flaming pile of coal resting on top of its body. A dual-type Rock/Fire creature, Coalossal is docile by nature. It will become enraged if its habitat is endangered, though, and will retaliate by incinerating the perpetrators.

In its Gigantamax form, Coalossal becomes a massive fiery mountain, basically a walking volcano. Its fire burns hotter than 2,000 degrees Celcius and some believe that it served as a giant heat source at a time when Galar was struck by an unforgiving cold wave that killed many humans and Pokémon.

12 Turtonator

Turtonator from Pokemon Sun and Moon

For a long time, most Fire-typePokémon played a similar role in battles. While they were split down the middle in terms of physical or special attacks, almost all were strong offense presences with middling to weak defense. Turtonator is memorable for bucking this trend.

This flaming bipedal turtle has a giant spiky shell that isn’t just for show. In-game, this defensive structure is used for Turtonator’s signature move, Shell Trap. If an opponent strikes with a physical attack the turn this move is used, Turttonator’s shell will hit back for a massive 150 special damage.

11 Cinderace

Pokemon Sword and Shield Gigantamax Cinderace

Cinderace is a football-playing rabbit, and it doesn’t get any cooler than that. Its signature hidden ability, Libero, allows it to become the same type as the move it’s using, thus granting it a STAB boost. Cinderace also has two incredible signature moves, Court Change and Pyro Ball, as well as the exclusive G-Max Move, G-Max Fireball.

Introduced in the Isle of Armor, Cinderace’s Gigantamax form shows it standing atop a massive fireball, which is said to often exceed a size of 300 feet. The fireball itself has eyes and a nose, as well as a bird-shaped fiery crest located on top of its head.

10 Infernape

Infernape Pokemon

The fiery star of the Sinnoh region, Infernape is one of the strongest non-Legendary Pokémon in Diamond and Pearl. Strong, resistant, and with a type combination that comes in handy time and again, Infernape is not only an excellent Pokémon, it’s also highly convenient within the Sinnoh region.

Design-wise, Infernape successfully blends all the elements it takes inspiration from. Obviously a monkey, it has long been suggested that Infernape is the Pokémon version of the massively popular character Son Goku, as evidenced by the golden elements in its design and its Japanese name, Goukazaru.

9 Charizard

The original cool Fire-type, Charizard remains one of Pokémon‘s most popular creations, twenty-five years after its introduction. A dual-type Fire/Flying mon, fans long complained about how Charizard should have gotten a different typing. In Generation VI, and with the introduction of Mega Evolution, Charizard finally became a dragon (but only its X version).

As a Pokémon, Charizard is good, although it does have a four-times weakness to the common Rock-type. Still, this ferocious beast’s reputation and popularity endure to this day, in large part thanks to how strong and memorable Ash’s Charizard is in the anime.

8 Arcanine

Pokemon Theory Arcanine Supposed To Be Legendary Beasts Gen 1 Trio

A Pokémon so powerful and majestic, many confuse it for a Legendary, or at least a Pseudo-Legendary, Arcanine is one of Generation I’s coolest designs. It apparently was meant to be a Legendary Pokémon and even appears next to the Kanto Legendary Birds in an engraving on the Pokémon Center in the anime’s second episode.

Alas, Arcanine may not be a Legendary but that doesn’t mean it’s any less amazing. Drawing inspiration from many fiery dogs and lions from East Asian mythology, like the Xiezhi and the Ryukyuan, Arcanine is a fiercely loyal Pokémon. It is said that anyone who hears its bark will grovel before it.

7 Entei

Entei Pokemon

One of the legendary Pokémon with the best lore, Entei is said to be born whenever a new volcano appears. Its fire is apparently hotter than magma and Pokémon lore states that whenever it roars, a volcano erupts somewhere in the world.

Along with its trio siblings, Suicune and Raikou, Entei is said to embody the three events that led to the Brass Tower’s destruction: Raikou is the thunder that hit the tower, Entei the fire that burned it, and Suicune the rain and winds that eventually put it out. Furthermore, it is also believed that their trio master, Ho-Oh, revived them from the ashes, and a popular theory asserts that they initially were a Jolteon, Flareon, and Vaporeon respectively.

6 Victini

Pokémon GO Makes Victini Available To Trainers Who Didn’t Attend Go Fest

Victini is a rare mythical Pokémon with a unique Fire/Psychic dual-typing that was first introduced in Generation V. Matching both its name and the generation it released in, a giant red V tops Victini’s small frame.

This Pokémon is said to bring automatic victory to any trainer that uses it, though this enticing rumor does not hold true in the video games. Victini is also host to several other powers; it can turn invisible, send visions to other beings, and transfer the infinite energy that builds inside its body.

5 Galarian Darmanitan – Zen Mode

Galarian Darmanitan in Zen Mode in Pokemon Sword & Shield

The original Darmanitan may be a fiery Pokémon based on mythology, but the Galarian version surprised many fans by looking like a snowman. This newer version, which traded Fire typing for Ice, is described in the Pokédex as having a calm demeanor and being interested in little more than finding food. Things change, however, when Galarian Darmanitan shifts to Zen Mode.

In an ironic twist on this form’s name, Galarian Zen Darmanitan becomes a dual-type Fire/Ice monster that relentlessly spews flames without regard for its surroundings or its own melting body. To enter this form, players need a Darmanitan with the Zen Mode ability. It will change forms in-battle if its HP falls to or below 50%.

4 Ho-Oh

Pokemon Crown Tundra DLC Ho-Oh

The game mascot of Pokémon Gold and its remake, Ho-Oh is also one of the first-ever Pokémon introduced in the anime. Witnessed by Ash at the end of the very first episode, it is said that the lucky few who see Ho-Oh will be granted eternal happiness. Its wings are capable of creating beautiful rainbows and it has the unique power to resurrect the dead.

Ho-Oh is very clearly based on the legend of the Phoenix, especially the Fenghuang, the immortal creature from Chinese legend. The Huma Bird, an immortal, never-resting bird said to fly perpetually without rest, may also take part in Ho-Oh’s design and inspiration. This Pokémon’s mythical inspirations are represented in Ho-Ho’s amazing combat prowess. It’s one of the few Pokémon stronger than Mewtwo.

3 Reshiram

Unova’s lore ranks among the Pokémon world’s most compelling and complex. It tells the story of two brothers who united a warring and divided land using a single powerful dragon. Soon after, they entered into conflict because of their beliefs, with the younger brother trusting ideals and the older seeking truth. The dragon thus divided, taking the form of the ideal-seeking Zekrom and the truth-trusting Reshiram.

Design-wise, Reshiram resembles a wyvern. Thanks to its white fur, long and voluminous mane, and large, bird-like wings, Reshiram is instantly recognizable. However, its jet engine-like tail is by far the most memorable part of its design. It can send flames out of its tail as it flies, incinerating everything on its path. By igniting its tail, it is believed that Reshiram can influence the earth’s temperature and alter the weather. Given this, it’s no surprise that Reshiram is one of the strongest Fire-type Pokémon.

2 Blacephalon

Of all the sources of inspiration that Pokémon designers have used to create their creatures, most fans were not expecting one based on a popping balloon. Blacephalon’s bright colors and bulbous, faceless head make it one of the strangest-looking Pokemon ever. Its odd design makes sense, though, as it’s not technically a Pokémon from the franchise’s primary dimension.

As an Ultra Beast, Blacephalon (and others like Stakataka and Guzzlord) is a monster that entered the Pokémon world from Ultra Space through a dimensional rift. Frighteningly, this creature’s Pokédex entry states that it slithers up to people and sets off the explosives in its head.

1 Magcargo

Magcargo has been around since Pokémon Gold and Silver. Though it’s never been highly viable in the competitive scene, this lava-made snail is a popular pocket monster with a solid fan base. One of the reasons for Macgargo’s popularity is its Pokédex entry, which describes it as one of the most remarkably intense fire Pokémon in the world.

According to entries from several mainline games, Magcargo’s body is a blistering 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s unknown how this Pokemon can traverse the world with a body that is twice the temperature of the Sun, yet somehow it does.
