Grown Ups

2010’s Grown Ups was the first Adam Sandler movie to ever get a sequel, cementing it at a defining moment in the comedian’s career. Grown Ups brings together some of Happy Madison’s biggest comedians, including Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, and Rob Schneider, as the friends reunite 30 years after their high school days. Although the first Grown Ups movie wasn’t Adam Sandler’s most critically acclaimed film, the movie was a massive box office success, leading to a sequel being made not long after the original was released.

The franchise came back for Grown Ups 2 in 2013, and while it wasn’t a critical success it did make $247 million, almost matching the $274.1 million made by the original Grown Ups. The film’s existence can mostly be drawn up to the financial returns of the original film as well as the marketability of the franchise’s comedians, all of whom returned for Grown Ups 2 with the exception of Rob Schneider. Grown Ups 2 is the only other Grown Ups film that exists, but there have been talks of a possible Grown Ups 3, meaning that the franchise could return for another sequel sometime in the future.

Hotel Transylvania

Unlike most of Adam Sandler’s other movies, 2012’s Hotel Transylvania is an animated family comedy. Surprisingly, the series just so happens to be Adam Sandler’s biggest franchise, with the series actually having four installments, a TV show, and several spin-off shorts. In the series, Adam Sandler plays Dracula, the owner of the titular massive monster hotel. The original film was a huge success, grossing $358.4 million, leading to the existence of Hotel Transylvania 2, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, and Hotel Transylvania: Transformania. Each of these films have been big successes, with the series easily becoming the Adam Sandler series with the most sequels.

Interestingly, Adam Sandler didn’t return for Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, the fourth film in the Hotel Transylvania franchise. Sandler, who left alongside his longtime friend and co-star Kevin James, was replaced by voice actor Brian Hull for the fourth film. Although the reasoning behind Adam Sandler’s departure was never explained, it could have something to do with his typical distaste for sequels. Four films are a lot for Sandler, and he could have simply become bored of the series. There’s also the possibility that Sandler’s decision could have been due to pay issues, scheduling conflicts, or a variety of other factors that could have played into him leaving Hotel Transylvania: Transformania.
