The Power Rangers’ New Dinosaur Forms Get Official Team Name & Powers

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers have upgraded into mutant dinos with the help of TMNT–and now, the Power Rangers’ new name and powers are revealed.

This article contains spoilers for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II #3The Power Rangers have always been associated with dinosaurs, and now, that association has been taken to the next level, with the Power Rangers not just representing dinosaurs, but actually mutating into them–and with a new team name and powers to match.

The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers were recruited by Zordon following the awakening of the evil sorceress Rita Repusla–and each of the new recruits were given Power Coins and Power Morphers through which they could access the Morphin Grid and become the heroic Power Rangers. For reasons that weren’t immediately clear, each Power Coin had a different dinosaur (or some other type of extinct, ancient animal) imprinted on it, and they also correlated with the type of Dinozord that belonged to each Power Ranger. The Red Ranger had a Tyrannosaurus, the Black Ranger had a Mastodon, the Blue Ranger had a Triceratops, the Yellow Ranger had a Saber-tooth Tiger, the Pink Ranger had a Pterodactyl, and the Green Ranger had a Dragon. Since they were first assigned to them, these Dinozords have become synonymous with each individual Power Ranger themselves–and now, that sentiment is more accurate than ever as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers become the Mighty Mutant Power Rangers.

The Power Rangers Are Now Dino-Mutants Thanks to the TMNT

In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II #3 by Ryan Parrott and Dan Mora, the Power Rangers have teamed up with the TMNT once more, as Rita Repulsa has sent a new wave of villains to attack the superhero teams in an effort to conquer Planet Earth. This time, the team of villains curated by Rita did a much better job of neutralizing the MMPR and TMNT threat by cutting off their access to the Morphin Grid–a power the Power Rangers temporarily shared with the Ninja Turtles during this conflict. This forced the two teams to retreat and come up with another way to battle the world-conquering villains–and Donatello and Billy came up with the perfect way: mutation.

By accessing what little energy remained in the Power Coins and Morphers mixed with the mutagen ooze, the Power Rangers were able to temporarily turn themselves into mutants based on their Dinozords, thereby becoming the Mighty Mutant Power Rangers. With their mutant aesthetic, the Power Rangers also received a slew of new powers associated with their assigned dino as well. The Pink Ranger can now fly like a pterodactyl, the Yellow Ranger had all the heightened, animalistic senses of a saber-tooth tiger, and even the Green Ranger teased that he can now breathe fire. Not only that, but all of their heads were morphed into those of their Dinozord-dinosaurs, which means that even though, say, the Red Ranger didn’t necessarily get a new ability (and was thankful he didn’t get stuck with tiny, little arms), he still had the head of a T-Rex, and could now rip his enemies to shreds with his teeth.

While the comic already made it clear that these mutations would be short-lived (with the fact that they happened in a TMNT crossover series as probably the greatest indication of that being true), it will be interesting to see how these new looks and abilities evolve over the course of this series. Every one of the Mighty Mutant Power Rangers were just getting used to their mutations in this comic while fighting Rita’s minions, so readers haven’t seen the full-extent of what they can do just yet–but that shouldn’t take away from how unbelievably exciting it is that the Power Rangers’ dinosaur forms now have an official team name and new powers.
