Bonnie Bennett was the wall that guarded Mystic Falls and the Mystic Gang in The Vampire Diaries, which is why she is still every fan’s favorite witch, even years after the show ended. It is impossible to talk about the Mystic Gang’s biggest victories without mentioning her contribution. She was the most selfless protagonist, with her self-sacrificial decisions sometimes reaching martyrdom levels.
Her decisions made the difference between life and death for her friends, which is why she was such an invaluable member of the Gang. From bringing Jeremy back from the dead to ending hell itself, Bonnie’s decisions only got better as she grew older and wiser.
When She Broke Up With Jeremy
Jeremy and Bonnie never had a strong chemistry like what Stefan and Elena had, or what Bonnie later shared with Enzo. Bonnie was more like Jeremy’s mother as she always had to teach, correct, and sometimes admonish the immature Gilbert. She was still the best thing that happened to Jeremy in the show and their relationship was fun while it lasted.
After leaving the Prison World, her eyes were opened, and she realized that she needed something in her life that Jeremy couldn’t offer. Leaving Jeremy was good for both of them, as it allowed Bonnie to perfect her skills as a witch and also help Jeremy become a better Hunter. Bonnie was also able to make her relationship with Enzo work, and it was way better than what she had with Jeremy.
When She Refused To Give Damon The Bennett Talisman
Damon and Bonnie became the best of friends, especially after their time together in the Prison World, but Damon wasn’t a reliable person in the first season. He wanted to free Katherine using the Bennett talisman, not knowing that she was never buried with the rest of the vampires under Fells Church and that the vampires would wreak havoc on humans.
When Damon demanded the talisman, Bonnie refused to give it to him, even though she didn’t know the possibly deadly consequences at the time. The vampires would have wiped out the descendants of the founding families who included some of Bonnie’s friends if Damon had managed to unlock the tomb.
When She Created A Daylight Ring For Caroline
Creating the Daylight Ring for Caroline was one of the best things that Bonnie did in the show, although it is often underrated because she made it seem so easy. Caroline had a difficult time transitioning into a vampire and being unable to walk around in the sunlight was only making it worse. Bonnie’s ring was the best gift Caroline received since she became a vampire.
Considering the fact that no one taught Bonnie how to create a Daylight Amulet, she must have given it a lot of training to pull off the spell that no other witch performed throughout the show. The ring gave Caroline her life back, allowing her to become one of the most humane vampires in the show.
When She Saved Jeremy’s Life
Bonnie and Jeremy weren’t the best of couples in The Vampire Diaries, but she loved Jeremy so much that she literally gave her life to save him. She ignored the warnings by Sheila and other Bennett witches about the risks of the spell, but she did it anyway.
Her sacrifice was worth it in the end because Jamie would never have fulfilled his destiny as a Hunter and a Member of The Brotherhood of the Five if he stayed dead at the time. Jeremy’s death would also have been unbearable for Elena and the rest of the Mystic Gang.
When She Didn’t End It All In The Prison World
The Prison World is one of the toughest challenges that Bonnie faced in The Vampire Diaries, and it nearly broke her. While Damon’s humor helped her get through some of the worst moments of the day they relived, it became unbearable causing Bonnie to contemplate suicide.
Bonnie’s strong will to live kicked in, helping her to figure out a way out of the Prison. Dying by suicide would have been a sad end to Bonnie Bennett because she was yet to fulfill most of her ambitions in life and the Mystic Gang still needed her.
When She Didn’t Give Up On Enzo
When Sybil took over Enzo’s mind, he did lots of bad things that shocked Stefan and the rest of the gang, but Bonnie never stopped believing that Enzo could be redeemed. Enzo was fighting Sybil’s control and leaving clues for Bonnie that the rest of the group couldn’t understand.
When Sybil forced Enzo to switch off his humanity, Bonnie still believed that the man she loved was in there and managed to save him in the end. Enzo became the best friend that Bonnie ever had, as he helped her defeat the biggest threats she came across, even after he died.
When She Woke Elena
It was Bonnie’s ultimate gift to her best friend and it reversed one of the greatest injustices of the show. Elena’s lively character and childhood dreams were dashed when she was forced to lie in a comatose state while Bonnie and the rest of her friends continued living their lives.
All the diaries and memories created for Elena would have been in vain if the show ended with Elena still trapped in the casket, which is why saving her was one of Bonnie’s best decisions in the show. It also proved that she was as powerful a witch in The Vampire Diaries as Emily and the rest of the Bennetts believed she was, as she broke Kai’s spell without hurting Elena or herself.
When She Figured Out How To Save Damon From Sybil
Sybil was one of the deadliest villains in The Vampire Diaries because no one seemed immune from her manipulation. She caused Damon and Enzo to commit some of the most tragic murders of the show without seeming to have any meaningful motive.
When Caroline, Bonnie, and Stefan entered Damon’s mind, it is Bonnie who figured out how to get rid of Sybil after she consulted her Grams in Damon’s mind and figured out where he kept the letter with the message on how to save him.
When She Chose To Be Happy In The End
Bonnie almost forgot about her own happiness as she spent most of her time on the show figuring out how to save everyone from the unending supernatural threats. She looked her best after her holiday trip to Paris with Enzo, which proved that she wasn’t living her best life in Mystic Falls. She promised Enzo that she would follow her dream and be happy and she kept it in the end.
Enzo’s death made life unbearable for Bonnie, as she still had to save everyone while mourning him. After suffering so much pain and loss all her life, she deserved at least one good turn, and traveling around the world with Enzo’s spirit accompanying her was a well-deserved break.
When She Destroyed Hell
Mystic Falls would never be safe with Katherine ruling hell because she would always figure out a way to hurt Elena and the rest of the people in the town. Bonnie’s role as the protector of the town was fulfilled when she finally eliminated Katherine and the rest of the dark forces that posed a threat to it.
Holding back the fires of hell required the help of all the Bennets which was a welcome family reunion for Bonnie after she had to fight through the dark days of losing Enzo. The sacrifice allowed her to say a proper goodbye to Enzo and the rest of her family, besides putting an end to Mystic Falls’ unending tragedies.
