The Winchesters Season 2 Story Teased By Showrunner

[ad_1]

The Winchesters season 2 story details are teased by showrunner Robbie Thompson, though there’s no confirmation on the show’s renewal. The Supernatural spinoff series is set in the 1970s and centers on John and Mary Winchester (Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly) as they meet, fall in love and fight the supernatural together. The show just finished its first season on The CW, and some familiar faces were brought back, including Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), who also narrates the new series.

Thompson reveals to TVLine that he already has plans for The Winchesters season 2. The show’s second season has been in talks at The CW, but with the network’s ongoing changes, there’s been no official renewal. The Winchesters‘ season 1 ending was treated as a series finale, but Thompson shares that he has high hopes for what a season 2 could potentially look like. Read Thompson’s full comments below:

That’s a great question, and I’m going to be judicious with my answer because I don’t know what’s going to happen, obviously, [at The CW]. I don’t think anybody does at this point. These are interesting times, as the kids say. We looked at [our first season] as chapters, and this first 13 episodes, whether we were going to get only 13 or 22, we wanted to end this chapter, both on the emotional side with Dean and on the plot side with the Akrida. That was by design, and some of it is exactly what you just said, which was this was the big romance of the, for lack of a better word, meet-cute of it all, and to me, it was an ending [to] that part of the story.

In terms of where we can go, the scale of this was, “It’s the end of the world,” and all of the normal hijinks. But that also kind of matches the scale of what you feel when you’re in that young romance, where you’re like, “Oh, my God, it’s us versus the world.” In success in a Season 2, without spoiling anything, we certainly know where we would want to go, and I think maybe you and I even talked about this as well when we spoke earlier [this season], the romance of this was always what was most appealing to me as a writer because I’d never really written much of that stuff in my career. The first act of that is always the meeting and the falling in love and the intensity of that. But then it’s a question of how do you sustain it, and what does that look like, especially in a universe where monsters are real? And so we have an incredible opportunity, given a chance to tell more story, to really get into the meat of what it means to be in a relationship in this kind of context, what it means to sustain love, not just fall in love.

What’s Going On At The CW?

The CW has been going through some significant changes as its new majority owners, Nexstar, implement their new broadcast plans. 75% ownership of The CW switched to Nexstar in November 2022, and network execs have made it clear that very few CW shows would be continuing on in the 2023/2024 broadcast season. On the heels of long-running hits Riverdale and The Flash announcing their conclusions, The CW is aiming to renew only a few scripted shows. So far, All American is the only title that is safe under the new regime.

The Winchesters was ordered ahead of Nexstar’s acquisition of The CW, and its future remains up in the air as the network figures out its plan for the future. Thompson has been cautious when discussing the show’s future and even fashioned The Winchesters season 1 finale as a potential conclusion. A season 2 has been brought up, but there’s been no official renewal or cancelation announcement.

Thompson’s decision to give season 1 a fairly definitive ending may be wise, but there’s still hope for The Winchesters‘ CW future. Supernatural went on for 15 seasons before it came to an end, and Nexstar should recognize the massive fan culture that surrounds the series, which is perhaps one of the reasons The Winchesters has made it this far. The show is carrying on its legacy of love in a supernatural world, and as Thompson has made clear, there is still plenty more story to tell.
