The Witcher’s Worst Romance Makes Geralt & Yennefer Even Better

[ad_1]

The Witcher: Blood Origin had its romance storyline with Éile and Fjall, but they only made Geralt and Yennefer’s relationship even better.

The universe of Netflix’s The Witcher expanded with the prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin, which introduced the series’ worst romance, but at least it makes Geralt (Henry Cavill) and Yennefer’s (Anya Chalotra) relationship even better. The world of The Witcher is quite extensive and rich, but as the Netflix version has taken a lot of creative liberties and hasn’t been loyal to the books, it has had to explain some of the events that happened before those of the series with an animated movie and a prequel series, but unfortunately, the latter didn’t have the expected success.

The Witcher: Blood Origin is set 1200 years before the events of the main series, and it chronicles the events leading to the Conjunction of the Spheres while also exploring the ancient Elven civilization Xin’trea before its demise and the creation of the first Witcher. Unfortunately, Blood Origin wasn’t well-received and was heavily criticized for its story, writing, and changes to The Witcher mythology, and it introduced this universe’s worst couple: Éile (Sophia Brown), a warrior elf, and Fjall (Laurence O’Fuarain), also a warrior elf who ended up becoming the first (but failed) witcher prototype. Éile and Fjall’s relationship was odd, but on the bright side, it made Geralt and Yennefer’s romance better than it already is.

Blood Origin Makes Geralt & Yennefer’s The Witcher Romance Look Better

The Witcher Geralt Yennefer together

The Witcher: Blood Origin is packed with action but it also made way for a romance between Éile and Fjall, though it’s one that ended in tragedy. Just like Geralt and Yennefer, there’s a love/hate dynamic between Éile and Fjall, but unlike the witcher and the sorcerer in the main series, Blood Origin’s main couple lacked depth. Éile and Fjall went from hating each other to loving each other quite fast and without much explanation, while Geralt and Yennefer’s relationship has become a complex roller coaster. Geralt and Yennefer met in The Witcher season 1, when Geralt requested her help to save Jaskier (Joey Batey) from a djinn, with Geralt promising to indulge her curiosity if she saved his friend. Yennefer and Geralt’s connection was immediate, but they also realized right away that they were keeping many secrets and information from each other.

Geralt and Yennefer’s relationship has gone through a lot since then, with Yennefer using Geralt for her revenge against some town council members and Geralt using his last wish from the djinn to save her, even though she didn’t want to be saved. After sleeping together, Geralt left and they didn’t see each other again until a year later, and they got to know each other a bit better this time. However, once again, their opposite ideas and views of the world got in the way, and it only got worse in The Witcher season 2 when Yennefer betrayed Geralt and Ciri (Freya Allan)

Although Éile and Fjall’s romance in Blood Origin was used to explain the origin of the Elder Blood and Ciri’s powers, it also served to show how good Geralt and Yennefer’s story is because, unlike that of Éile and Fjall, theirs is a lot more complex as various elements come into play, and it’s not just a matter of loving or hating each other.

Geralt & Yennefer’s Romance Needs To Move Forward In Witcher S3

The Witcher season 2 Yennefer Geralt

Geralt used his djinn wish to bind his and Yennefer’s fates together, which led to Yennefer believing her feelings for him were the result of magic, which deeply hurt her. Later, in The Witcher season 2, Yennefer’s actions broke Geralt’s trust, and he might not forgive her easily even if she sacrificed herself to save Ciri. However, they won’t stop crossing paths as a result of Geralt’s wish, and if The Witcher season 3 will finally see Yennefer mentoring Ciri and becoming her mother figure, her relationship with Geralt will also have to move forward. Geralt and Yennefer have a lot of work to do in their relationship, but instead of having them reconcile briefly only to separate again, The Witcher season 3 needs to explore their dynamic deeper, especially now that Ciri is part of it.
