Transformers: Rise of the Beasts‘ new posters offer a detailed look at three of the core characters in the upcoming franchise film. Rise of the Beasts is the latest outing for the Transformers live-action film series, which began with Michael Bay’s Transformers back in 2008. This new film, which was directed by Steven Caple Jr., is expected to hit theaters on June 9. Set in 1994, it follows Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos) and Elena Wallace (Dominique Fishback) as they unwittingly get mixed up in an ancient battle involving Transformers known as Maximals who have the ability to take the shape of various animals that were a major part of the original Beast Wars cartoon.

Is the Transformers Franchise Finally on an Upswing?

Optimus Prime in Transformers Rise of the Beasts

Although the Transformers films have consistently been box office successes, the franchise has been in the doldrums for nearly a decade. This began when production gaps grew larger, until eventually three years separated the final extant films in the main branch of the franchise, 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction and 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight. Critics’ responses to these films also got more and more dour, with The Last Knight bottoming out at a dismal 16 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Last Knight‘s immediate follow-up was the 2018 prequel Bumblebee. That film, with its astonishing Certified Fresh 91 percent rating, seemed to be a beacon for a new age of the franchise. However, its middling box office led the franchise to go dormant for half a decade.

The buzz around Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is showing that the franchise may finally have a chance to continue the upswing it began with Bumblebee. If it can harness the same prequel trick while using its deeper connection to the larger franchise to rake in bigger box office, the series could be properly resurrected. This would be just in time for a new boom in Transformers sequels, which involves at least five titles including a 2024 film follow-up titled Transformers: A New Generation is already on the way.
