The show 1923 is the latest installment in Taylor Sheridan’s ever-expanding Western saga that started with Yellowstone back in 2018. The Neo-Western drama has centered around the Dutton family through different generations, beginning with Yellowstone where Kevin Costner starred as John Dutton III, the patriarch in charge of the family’s affairs in Paradise Valley, Montana. The show1883 was the next installment and showed us the Dutton lineage in the earlier days of American expansion, where the family was led by James and Margaret Dutton played by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill respectively. Now, 1923 is the latest prequel centering around the plucky family, and in true Yellowstone fashion, there is a star-studded cast playing the leading characters.

Who Is Going to Star In 1923?

Fans have come to expect A-list actors to take part in the series, Kevin Costner wasn’t the only Hollywood star to act in the original series Yellowstone, he was joined by Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes, Pride and Prejudice) as Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser (Good Will Hunting, 2 Fast 2 Furious) who plays John Dutton’s, loyal right-hand man. 1883 continued this fashion and breathed new life into the cast as producers drafted in Isabel May to play Elsa Dutton and Tim McGraw as James Dutton. However, 1923 potentially has the most well-recognized cast to date. Sheridan has managed to draft Harrison Ford (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) into the mix to play the family’s patriarch, but also Helen Mirren as the family’s Matriarch. Other honorable mentions include Sebastian Roché (Odyssey 5, The Vampire Diaries) who plays an interesting character, Father Renaud, headmaster of the school for Native Americans, and Darren Mann (Giant Little Ones) as Jack Dutton.

What Story Line Should We Expect From 1923?

As the name suggests, this current series is set in 1923, originally entitled 1932 but was shortly changed to 1923 as the producers decided to set it a decade earlier. It will center around two generations of the Dutton family as they face numerous historical events that settlers and Natives alike went through during the early period of the 20th century. Based in Montana the family need to survive through things such as severe drought, prohibition, the Great Depression in Montana, cattle theft and the usual family drama that we can expect from a Yellowstone prequel. Whilst 1883 focussed on the family traveling across the American plains and following how they eventually came to name Montana their home, 1923 is set 40 years later when the Dutton’s are an established name in the state. Although they are comfortable on their ranch, a series of ‘ranch wars’ sets off, as a mixed bunch of developers and hunters have an eye on their plot. Harrison Ford’s character may be the most obvious of Dutton family members you wouldn’t want to annoy, but Cara, played by Helen Mirren looks like the most cutthroat of them all.

Where to Watch 1923

You can catch 1923 on Paramount+, and the first episode is set to air on December 18, 2022, in the U.S. and Canada and will be made available for those in the U.K. and Canada a day later on the 19th of December. The star-studded show will also air on cable Paramount Network immediately following episode 7 of the latest episode of Yellowstone with the second episode being aired on January 1, 2023.

The show has been confirmed to last two seasons, but it is not yet known whether this will be based in 1923 alone or will expand over a few years after. The first season of 1923 will be 8 episodes long in total, it is still unknown how long the episodes running time will be, but we can quite safely assume they will be around an hour long.
