Adventure television has been popular for years. Watching people navigate their way through treacherous conditions and living environments has both intrigued and entertained people for years. Perhaps peaking in popularity with Bear Grylls and his show, Man vs. Wild, Grylls gained stardom through adventures in Amazonian jungles and African deserts. The show followed Grylls, trying to survive the roughest of terrains equipped with his knowledge and a plucky can-do attitude. It is a similar challenge in which 7 Toughest Days sets itself. But who is our main adventurer in this new high-octane series? Let’s find out.

Who Is Dwayne Fields?

Just like Bear Grylls before him, Dwayne Fields is the presenter, explorer, and naturalist who has taken up the challenge in 7 Toughest Days. Although Fields was also brought up in London, like Grylls, the pair had quite a different upbringing. Born in Jamaica, Dwayne moved to London at the young age of 6 and his formative years were influenced by social stigmas. Through no fault of his own, Dwayne was exposed to and eventually caught up in knife crime and gun violence in inner-city London. After being exposed to violence, Dwayne eventually fell victim to a life-threatening incident and displaying the same endeavor he would be later in life, took himself out of that situation by setting himself a series of challenges.

After being inspired by his early childhood in Jamaica, Dwayne had a love for nature and wildlife that he wanted to reconnect with. This influenced the challenges he set out for himself in the years to come culminating in becoming the first black Briton to walk over 400 nautical miles to reach the magnetic North Pole. After doing so, the accolades started coming through and Dwayne was awarded the Freedom of the City of London, which is the city’s highest honor. However, this was awarded for his work with disadvantaged young people. Fields founded a charity, WeTwoFoundation, with fellow adventurer Phoebe Smith, that takes young people from across the UK on expeditions.

So what challenge has Fields set out in the new show, 7 Toughest Days? During the show, Fields and his team have to navigate through some of the world’s toughest and most inhospitable environments to safety over the course of 7 days, pretty simple right? This isn’t a groundbreaking concept, but Natural Geographic delivers on everything you would expect, stunning natural beauty shots, fantastic camera work, and dramatic expeditions that all add up to an enjoyable formula. The camera work in particular makes this an exciting and enthralling watch, especially the shaky first-person shots that transport you to the terrain the team is having to navigate.
