The Long History of Aqua Teen Hunger Force

If you’re not familiar with Aqua Teen Hunger Force (also known as simply ATHF or Aqua Teen) it originated as an animated series on the cable channel Adult Swim’s late-night block of programming. It was an important part of the network’s early programming, alongside other animated shows such as Sealab 2021, The Brak Show, and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.

The series’ main cast consists of the anthropomorphic food characters Master Shake (a shameless milkshake who acts as the de facto leader of the trio), Frylock (an intelligent, good-natured floating box of French fries), and Meatwad (a child-like, innocent meatball who is easily manipulated – often by Shake). Set in New Jersey, the characters live together as roommates. They have frequent run-ins with their neighbor Carl, who has a love-hate relationship with the teens.

If you’re not familiar with Aqua Teen, this entire premise is likely to sound bizarre and nonsensical. You would be correct – the series is known for its surreal, one-off episodes. Sometimes they encounter the havoc-wrecking aliens, The Mooninites. Even stranger are weirder recurring antagonists such as MC Pee Pants, a rapper who frequently incorporates (not so) subliminal messages into his music.

The show was originally created, written, and directed by the creative team of Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro. The pair also frequently do voices on the show, with Willis serving as the voice of Shake, Meatwad, and Carl. Maiellaro frequently fills in other voice roles, including voicing the Mooninites.

As a running joke, the show changed titles from season 8 on. So if you’re looking for more ATHF and come across Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1, Aqua Something You Know Whatever, Aqua TV Show Show, or Aqua Teen Hunger Force Forever, know that those are the alternate titles for seasons 8-11.

As for Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Plantasm, the movie is a stand-alone sequel to the 2007 film, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters. The previous film was known for its strange picture-in-picture debut on Adult Swim but was made infamous prior to that by its guerilla marketing, which lead to the 2007 Boston bomb scare.

Despite 11 seasons and 2 movies, this (still) isn’t the end of the Aqua Teen crew. Recently, a 5 episode season 12 was announced, so expect even more adventures from the crew.
