This is where you can find everything on how to watch Of Miracles and Men, the 2015 documentary chronicling one of the greatest upsets in sports history.

Of Miracles and Men centers on the shocking defeat of the Soviet Union hockey team at the hands of the U.S.A. amateur squad during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. It’s hardly the first TV show or movie to address the subject. In 1981, ABC’s made-for-TV movie Miracle on Ice first dramatized the famous game featuring Karl Malden as US hockey coach, Herb Brooks. Then in 2014, Kurt Russell took on the same role in Gavin O’Connor’s 2014 Miracle which saw wide distribution in cinemas. Of Miracles and Men separates itself from any previous film by telling the story from the perspective of the Soviet Union, who came into the game with supreme confidence. The documentary, narrated by Jeff Daniels, sets the stage for the famous Olympic encounter by giving ample background on the hockey culture in the Soviet Union with extensive interviews with players and coaches.

Attempting to Explain the Impossible

The Miracle on Ice Game

Director Jonathan Hock is no stranger to sports-related productions, with his first feature Through the Fire documenting the rise of NBA prodigy Sebastian Telfair. He followed that effort with the 2015 Fastball and numerous ESPN documentaries including Unguarded, which explained how a drug addiction destroyed the career of basketball player Chris Herren. Of Miracles and Men narrator and avid NHL fan Jeff Daniels was undoubtedly eager to work on Hock’s telling of the legendary 1980 Olympic hockey game.

Of Miracles and Men begins with 1980 Soviet Olympic and NHL defenseman Viacheslav “Slava” Fetisov accompanied by his daughter, visiting New York City and eventually Lake Placid, the site of the miraculous hockey game. Through Fetisov’s accounts along with interviews from several other Soviet players, viewers are given a sense of just how overconfident the team was heading into the miracle game, after steamrolling competition and winning 4 straight Olympic gold medals. The documentary then focuses on the Miracle on Ice game itself, including the effect of the benching of legendary Soviet goalie Vladislav Tretiak after giving up only two goals in the 1st period. Hock also makes a striking contrast between the Al Michaels “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” call and how a dejected Soviet announcing team described the defeat.
