The storyline follows 3 characters, firstly, Alison Brie (Community, GLOW) plays Ally, a workaholic, recently fired TV producer who is on a trip back to her quant middle-American hometown and serendipitously bumps into her ex-partner whilst in a café. Ally’s ex is a character named Sean, played by Jay Ellis (Top Gun: Maverick, Insecure) who has remained in the town after the two split up many moons ago. The two kick it off and reminiscently spend some time together, Ally even goes as far as visiting Sean’s family for a meal. The sparks are beginning to reignite on both sides of the equation and Ally slowly realizes that Sean may be ‘the one’ that got away.

However, as expected in a rom-com, there is a slight spanner in the works, in fact, there is a huge spanner in the works. Sean is engaged. His fiancé is a character called Cassidy played by actor Kiersey Clemons (The Flash, Dope). Cassidy makes the situation even more confusing for Ally and the main protagonist goes on a journey of self-discovery and realization. Ally realizes that Cassidy is a great match for Sean and a great partner, the realization on Ally’s part is that Cassidy reminds her of herself many moons ago and perhaps the person she could have become. Ally ponders if leaving her hometown and her relationship with Sean was the best move. This is the main narrative of the movie, discovering where you are from and where you are going and what, if at all, personal relationships affect the path you are destined to take.

Alison Brie co-wrote the romantic comedy with her real-life husband, Dave Franco (21 Jump Street, The Rental). This is Franco’s 2nd feature-length movie which he has written and directed after The Rental in 2020 which Brie also starred in. Franco has talked about his own relationship with Brie being an important inspiration for Somebody I Used to Know, after stumbling upon an old voice recording of a drunken Brie claiming her love for him. This evoked a romantic nostalgia that inspired the film, and there is certainly a classic ’80s and ’90s rom-com vibe.
