Who Voices Venom In Spider Man 2’s Game Trailer

The Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game’s debut trailer features a Candyman, Final Destination, and DC Animated Movie Universe star as Venom’s voice actor.

Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will arrive in 2023, continuing the story of the first game and its 2020 spinoff, Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The sequel’s debut trailer at the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase revealed classic villain and antihero Venom will appear in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, announcing himself with an ominous – or perhaps hopeful – voice line.

The first two Marvel’s Spider-Man games featured iconic villains such as Doctor Octopus and Norman Osborn, and the sequel’s brief trailer teased Kraven the Hunter and Venom will join the lineup. When Kraven asks, “Will one of you finally give me what I desire?,” questioning whether Peter Parker or Miles Morales will be able to give him a worthy challenge in combat, Venom is instead the one to reply, saying, “Yes… WE will.” Besides hinting at a possible playable Venom, the line revealed he is voiced by horror legend Tony Todd.

Todd confirmed the fact on Twitter after the trailer aired, also telling a fan Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is “massive,” hence why it won’t come out until 2023. Todd is perhaps most well known for playing the titular character in the original, 1990s Candyman horror series, based on a short story by Hellraiser creator Clive Barker. Todd played Daniel Robitaille, aka Candyman, a 19th-century man who suffered an unjust murder and returns to seal the fate of anyone who says his name five times into a mirror. Todd is also well known for his role as William Bludworth in the Final Destination franchise, and he’s no stranger to comic book villain voices, voicing Darkseid in the DC Animated Movie Universe films and Zoom in The CW’s The Flash TV series.

One of Todd’s defining traits is his deep voice. His low-octave vocals have served him well portraying mysterious, foreboding characters. The usage of such a horror legend’s vocal stylings for a character like Venom is a smart choice; as Insomniac Games seeks to make Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s story darker than its predecessors, Todd should be well equipped to bring the sometimes villainous, sometimes helpful alien to life.

Todd’s past horror roles could also make him a great fit for Venom’s body horror undertones. While it’s had many hosts, the true identity of Venom is a shapeless alien symbiote. Its fellow symbiote, Carnage, leans more into the horror element of Venom’s origins, and it’s unknown at this point Insomniac Games plans to feature Carnage in the game, but Venom can be plenty scary in its own right. If Insomniac’s Spider-Man villain track record is any indication, the Tony Todd-voice acted Venom featured in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will likely be more than enough to satiate symbiote fans.
