Winnie The Pooh’s Horror Movie, Blood & Honey: Cast, Story Details & Everything We Know

[ad_1]

The upcoming movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey puts a horror twist on the beloved children’s character. Written and directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey reimagines a slasher thriller starring A. A. Milne’s characters. The most popular of Milne’s characters has always been the gentle Winnie the Pooh. With the original stories lapsing into the public domain, Pooh and Piglet end up going on a murderous rampage, steering away from their classic tales of charming adventures.

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey attracted attention when stills from the film were released online. The news caused mixed reactions from the public, with some horrified at what Winnie the Pooh has been turned into and others expressing genuine interest and curiosity about the bizarre Pooh concept. In a recent interview, Frake-Waterfield shared how challenging it was to balance the elements of horror and comedy, especially since his film’s characters are already established. After all, compared to the Christopher Robin live-action movie, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey could simply become an absurd, disrespectful retelling if not done right. Here’s everything that’s known about the Winnie the Pooh horror movie.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Rhys Frake-Waterfield has been receiving death threats over the film. While changing the beloved childhood figure into a bloodthirsty slasher villain may certainly ruffle some feathers, it certainly doesn’t warrant the treatment that has been sent director Frake-Waterfield’s way since the film’s inception. According to the Blood and Honey creator, he’s encountered petitions, death threats, and even people saying they’ll call the police. “Look, this is mental, I’ve had petitions to stop it. I’ve had death threats. I’ve had people saying they called the police,” said Frake-Waterfield. This, of course, has only added to publicity but is still unwarranted.

Since the film is an independent project, made on a shoestring budget and filmed in merely 10 days, the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey cast list is quite small. Craig David Dowsett (The House that Zombies Built) plays Winnie the Pooh, while Chris Cordell (The Curse of Humpy Dumpty) portrays Piglet. Amber Doig-Thorne plays lead scream queen Alice, and Nikolai Leon portrays the adult Christopher Robin in the Blood and Honey cast. Christopher Robin’s fiancé Mary is played by Paula Coiz, while other cast members include Danielle Scott (Charlene), Maria Taylor (Maria), Danielle Ronald (Zoe), Natasha Tosini (Lara), May Kelly (Tina), and Natasha Rose Mills (Jessica).

Recently, the director of Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey revealed details about the horror film’s plot. When Christopher Robin left Winnie the Pooh and Piglet for college, the two were neglected and forced to fend for themselves, causing them to go back to their animal roots and become feral. Pooh and Piglet resorted to hunting prey and eating their victims; prior to the events of the film, the two even ate Eeyore in order to survive. Years later, Christopher would return with his fiancé, but his old friends’ hatred and resentment had already spilled over into a murderous rampage targeting college girls staying at a cabin.

How A Winnie The Pooh Horror Movie Can Be Made (What About Disney?)

Every year, thousands of creative works become part of the public domain, despite what Disney may want. Since these literary and artistic pieces are already free from intellectual property rights, anyone can use them, and create, publish, or distribute works based on them without securing a license. Under U.S. copyright law, works published from 1923 to 1977 would enter the public domain 95 years after their first publication.

Those published in 1926, including A. A. Milne’s first Winnie the Pooh book, lapse into the public domain. But in 1966, Disney acquired the character copyrights and created its versions of Pooh and the other characters, such as Piglet, Eeyore, and Christopher Robin. As such, everything included and detailed in the book became free for all; Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey is strictly based on the 1926 book, with Pooh and Piglet wearing a lumberjack suit and black clothes, respectively. Also, because other characters like Tigger were introduced later and thus still in copyright, they will not appear in the horror film.
