Wolverine’s Daughter Just Made His Most Iconic Attack Even Cooler

The Fastball Special is one of Wolverine’s most iconic attacks, and now his daughter has made it even cooler.

Wolverine’s daughter has made his most iconic attack even cooler. The Fastball Special is one of Wolverine’s signature moves, and in Captain Marvel #46, his daughter Laura, while in deep space assisting Captain Marvel with a rescue mission, puts her own spin on it, with some help from Polaris. This new riff on the Fastball Special, however, is just as effective and brutal as her father’s.

Captain Marvel #46 is written by Kelly Thompson, illustrated by Javier Pina, colored by Yen Nitro and lettered by Clayton Cowles. In the previous issue, Captain Marvel received a distress call from Rogue, who was in deep space; her craft was under siege by the Brood. Captain Marvel hastily assembled a rescue team, including Rogue’s husband Gambit, as well as Polaris and Wolverine (Laura Kinney). The team splits into two, with Polaris, Wolverine and Gambit finding themselves on the opposite side of the space station. As they try to clear the way, Polaris asks Wolverine if she is ready. She replies “yes.” Polaris then uses her magnetic powers to throw Wolverine at a gaggle of Brood; she instantly shreds them.

As Polaris hurls Wolverine, she tells Laura “you are my very favorite thing to throw,” to which Wolverine replies the “feeling’s mutual.”

Wolverine and Colossus execute the perfect fastball special to save the day in Astonishing X-Men #6

The Fastball Special is one of the most iconic moves in comic book history, and can trace its roots back to 1976’s Uncanny X-Men #100. In that classic story by the legendary creative team of Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum, Colossus used his great strength to throw the scrappy Wolverine at an opponent. The attack was effective, and became Wolverine and Colossus’ signature move. There have been numerous parodies and homages of the Fastball Special over the years, and now in deep space, his daughter has done him proud with her own version of it.

The basic premise is still the same: a small and scrappy Wolverine is thrown at an opponent, only here, instead of Colossus using his super-strength, it is Polaris, using her magnetic powers. Laura’s skeleton is laced with adamantium, just like her father, which gives Polaris something to latch onto. The effect is just as devastating as her father’s version; furthermore, while Colossus was very strong and could throw Logan great distances, Polaris has potential to be even better thanks to her magnetic powers. In theory, there are no limitations to how far Polaris can toss Wolverine, and could possibly even control Laura’s motion in air, turning her into a guided missile of sorts. Laura’s father would no doubt approve of this new riff on his classic attack.

Where the two teams depart is the attitude and motivations behind it. Colossus and Wolverine were a unit, one built on trust and friendship; on the other hand, his daughter and Polaris have a far more tense relationship, as seen in their dialogue in this issue. While Laura can depend on Polaris not to kill her, Polaris may be a bit rougher on her than Colossus was on her father. Nevertheless, Wolverine’s daughter has made his most iconic attack even cooler–and powerful.
