Chase, now 79, was reportedly addicted to drugs in the ’70s and ’80s and went to rehab in 1986 for an addiction to prescription painkillers.

Most recently, the actor starred on Community from 2009 until a clash with the show’s creator Dan Harmon in 2012 caused him to leave. He reprises his role in the latest National Lampoon sequel, Vacation.

Reports of alleged on-set misconduct have been cited as the reason for Chase departing his role as Pierce Hawthorne on Community.

In 2021, Chase opened up about his on-set clash with Harman and his waning health in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

He addressed claims he acted like a “jerk” while filming the hit NBC show.

“And I like who I am. I don’t care. And it’s part of me that I don’t care,” he said.

“I’ve thought about that a lot. And I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just don’t care.”

Chase also revealed he had a five-week stint in hospital in 2021 after suffering “near-fatal” heart failure.

“I was in the hospital five weeks. A heart issue,” he told the publication.”

“So, for now, I’m around the house. Not going anywhere.”
