Yakira‘s family shared the news with Deadline, who reports that she passed from acute asphyxia. She was with her mother outside a mall in Newport Beach, Calif. on Wednesday last week, when she began suffering breathing difficulties and then collapsed.

For her role on NCIS: Hawai’i, Yakira joined the show as a staff writer in the debut season, and was then promoted to story editor for season two.

She wrote four episodes, and was part of ViacomCBS’s Writers Mentoring Program in 2020-2021.

NCIS: Hawai’i will be airing a tribute to her in January, just a week after a three-hour NCIS universe crossover event.

In addition to being a story editor on the show, Yakira also starred in HBO’s Insecure; Saban Films’ John Henry, the comedy short series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl; and the comedy series M.O. Diaries.
