Quentin Tarantino Reveals He Did Write ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Role For Adam Sandler; Shares Why He Wasn’t Cast

Quentin Tarantino has just revealed that Adam Sandler was set to have a role in Inglourious Basterds.

In a new interview on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, the director admitted that the role of Sergeant Donny “The Bear Jew” Donowitz was written for the Hustle star.

Quentin first explained that he had met Adam during Little Nicky, which he had a cameo in, before revealing that since hitting it off on that project, he went and wrote the Bear Jew for Adam.

“The Bear Jew was going to…I wrote the Bear Jew for Adam Sandler. When I was doing Little Nicky, he’s telling me like, ‘Oh man, I get to f***ing beat up Nazis with a bat? F***ing script! F***ing awesome! I can’t fucking wait! I can’t f***ing wait!’ He was like telling every Jewish guy, “I’m going to f***ing play this guy who beats up Nazis with a f***ing bat.’”

Ultimately, Adam ended up starring in Judd‘s Funny People, which had been filming at the exact same time.

As for finding a replacement, Quentin said that it was a little difficult.

“Here’s the problem. [Judd] wrapped up all the good Jews [for Funny People],” he shared. “That was the problem. Seth Rogen and all the good Jews were doing Funny People. I’m killing Hitler with baseball bats and there’s no good Jews available! David Krumholtz, nobody! All the good Jews were all wrapped up! I’m doing the Jewish male fantasy!”

The role was ultimately played by Eli Roth.
