Selena Gomez’s ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Co-Star Jennifer Stone Almost Auditioned to Play Alex Before Booking Harper

Selena Gomez almost had some friendly competition for her role as Alex Russo in her Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place – her on-screen best friend Jennifer Stone.

Jennifer, who wound up playing Harper Finkle on the series, opened up about her audition process on her new podcast with fellow co-star David DeLuise.

The actress explained that she had been brought on to audition for Alex. However, it changed suddenly.

“At the last minute they handed me the Harper sides. They were like ‘no, we really feel like you’re a good fit for this.’ I was like Ok, and then I fought for it to be a series regular,” she recalled.

She continued, noting that “I was completely dressed for Alex. I had done the homework for Alex and then I had to completely cold read.”

Although she got a slightly smaller part, Jennifer agreed with the way that things worked out.

“It’s a much better fit,” she said. “Watching it back now, Selena and my dynamic, what we established with each other, I think we created something really beautiful.”

Selena and Jennifer had a reunion last year and recreated one of their iconic scenes from the show.
