‘Till’ Actress Danielle Deadwyler Reacts to Oscars Snub

Danielle Deadwyler was expected to received a Best Actress nomination at the 2023 Oscars for her work in the movie Till, but she was among the many snubs this year.

The 40-year-old actress had her breakout role playing Mamie Till-Mobley in the new movie, which was directed by Chiononye Chukwu.

After the snub, Chukwu wrote on Instagram, “We live in a world and work in industries that are so aggressively committed to upholding whiteness and perpetuating an unabashed misogyny towards Black women.”

Danielle just made her first comments about the snub and she agrees with the sentiment.

“We’re talking about people who perhaps chose not to see the film,” she said Kermode & Mayo’s Take podcast (via THR). “We’re talking about misogynoir. It comes in all kinds of ways. Whether it’s direct or indirect, it impacts who we are.”

She continued, “The question is more intent on people who are living in whiteness, white people’s assessment of what the spaces they are privileged by are doing.”

For those who don’t know, “misogynoir” is defined as “the specific hatred, dislike, distrust, and prejudice directed toward Black women.”
