Twitter is unveiling even more rules since the Elon Musk takeover of the platform, generating plenty of backlash and criticism.

The social media platform announced on Sunday (December 18) that users are no longer allowed to do “free promotion of certain social media platforms” on Twitter.

“We recognize that many of our users are active on other social media platforms. However, we will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter,” the official Twitter Support account wrote.

“Specifically, we will remove accounts created solely for the purpose of promoting other social platforms and content that contains links or usernames for the following platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr and Post.”

“We still allow cross-posting content from any social media platform. Posting links or usernames to social media platforms not listed above are also not in violation of this policy,” they added. Click here to see the full new policy.

“At both the Tweet level and the account level, we will remove any free promotion of prohibited 3rd-party social media platforms, such as linking out (i.e. using URLs) to any of the below platforms on Twitter, or providing your handle without a URL,” the policy states.

“Prohibited platforms” include “Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Post and Nostr.

Third party social media link aggregators “such as linktr.ee and lnk.bio” are now also prohibited.

The news comes as more tech journalists continue to be suspended on the platform for covering Elon Musk, seemingly without violating any rules. At least one politician has already called out Elon Musk for the recent bans and social media platform changes.
