Partner Content | Best Super Bowl defensive player prop picks: Back Javon Hargrave to record a sack

[ad_1]

Will the old adage of defence wins championships ring true in the Super Bowl this weekend?

The pregame narrative: Justin Reid has been a force for the Kansas City Chiefs and we’re expecting him to make some key tackles in the secondary. Javon Hargrave has put together a stellar season and is plus money to record a sack, while Darius Slay holds value on his tackle line.

Check out our best Super Bowl defensive player prop picks for February 12.

NFL odds as of 1:24 p.m. on 02/10/2023.

Super Bowl defensive player prop picks

Best Bet : Reid over 5.5 tackles (+105)

The Philadelphia Eagles offence is rolling, meaning Reid is likely to be busy on Sunday night.

Kansas City’s safety has averaged 4.88 tackles in the regular season, which is slightly below this mark. That said, he’s cleared this total in five of his past six games, including each of the Chiefs’ playoff appearances.

Reid’s 13 postseason tackles rank second on KC behind only Nick Bolton (14), which is pretty impressive considering the latter is a linebacker. It also says something about how often the Chiefs are forcing opponents to make plays over the middle.

Trent McDuffie has been an absolute stud for Kansas City at cornerback this season. The rookie has been a lockdown defender on the outside and blanketed Ja’Marr Chase last weekend, holding him to just one catch for eight yards on three targets.

We’re expecting him to show up again Sunday, meaning Philadelphia’s passing attack will have to look elsewhere for production.

Reid should also contribute at stopping the run.

The Eagles RPO game is sublime and Jalen Hurts and Co. often find themselves breaking into the second level after misdirecting the opposing defence. Reid should be waiting there to make a play.

Key stat: Reid has averaged six tackles per game since Week 15.

Quick picks

Hargrave over 0.5 sacks (+160): Hargrave was one of four Eagles with 10-plus sacks this year (11) and we think he’s primed for a big performance in the Super Bowl.

The interior lineman recorded a sack against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game and also picked up a sack in three of his last five regular season games.

The Chiefs are going to have to pay extra attention to Haason Reddick — he’s recorded 3.5 sacks in two playoff games and is -155 to nab one on Sunday. That should open up space for Hargrave in the interior.

Slay over 2.5 tackles (-125): Slay has cleared this line in six of his last seven games (postseason included) and we expect him to feature heavily in Philadelphia’s defensive scheme.

The Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes under centre and that means a strong passing attack is a foregone conclusion.

Asking Philly’s best cornerback to make three tackles isn’t much, especially if the Eagles want him to be involved in covering Travis Kelce.
