Best World Cup Group G odds

The favourite: Brazil (-295)

Brazil’s five World Cups are the most among any nation, and judging by the odds, the stars could align for a sixth.

The team is stacked up and down the roster and is favoured to win the tournament at +400.

Neymar, Vinicius Junior, Gabriel Jesus, and Rodrygo are among the biggest names that highlight a loaded forward group. One story worth watching is Neymar’s international goal total — he’s just two behind the legendary Pele’s record of 77.

The defence is locked down by the likes of Thiago Silva and Marquinhos, while the midfield consists of stars like Casimiro, Fred, Lucas Paqueta and Fabinho.

Brazil’s biggest question mark may be who starts in goal.

Both Alison and Ederson are world-class keepers, who start for England’s most successful teams in Liverpool and Manchester City. Emerson has 57 caps to Alisson’s 18 but most countries would be itching to have either between the pipes — it’s truly a champagne problem.

The Brazilians have advanced past the group stage in 13 consecutive tournaments and have reached the quarterfinals in every World Cup since 1990.

Brazil’s won its group in every edition of this tournament since 1978, so even at -305, this pick could hold value.

Other Group G choices

Best value: Switzerland (+575)

The Swiss have made it out of their group in three of the last four World Cups and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them do so again.

With Brazil in the mix, +575 may be a little rich. That said, its -105 odds to advance should certainly be worth a look. The Swiss are chock-full of veterans that have plenty of international experience.

Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka are among the elder statesmen in this group and lock down the midfield. Both have over 100 caps for Switzerland with 26 and 12 international goals, respectively.

The defence and goaltending are equally seasoned. Yaan Sommer is between the pipes and has started 76 games for the Swiss. On the back end, Ricardo Rodriguez has 100 caps while five other defenders have 30-plus appearances for Switzerland.

The forward group is a little more green. Harris Seferovic is the only attacker on the current squad over the age of 25, but Breele Embolo of AS Monaco has 58 caps to his name, bringing some additional experience.

Team to watch: Serbia (+650)

Serbia hasn’t made it out of the group stage since 1998 but has plenty of experienced veterans to lean on.

Dusan Tadic and Aleksander Mitrovic are captain and vice-captain of the squad, with the latter’s 50 international goals being the most in the country’s history.

The real x-factor is Dusan Vlahovic, though.

The 22-year-old has eight goals in 16 national team appearances and was recently bought by Juventus for 70 million euros. He’s been an immediate force in Italy’s top-flight competition, scoring 12 goals in 22 games.

If he can get going, the Serbs could very well find themselves in the elimination stage for the first time in 24 years.
