UFC Fight Night main event cancelled; Canadians shine on undercard

[ad_1]

UFC fans were dealt an unexpected blow Saturday when the organization announced a scheduled five-round main event between Nikita Krylov and Ryan Spann had been cancelled mere hours before the two light-heavyweights were set to walk to the cage.

The cancellation was due to Krylov falling ill earlier in the day. It was announced on the broadcast the 17-fight UFC veteran had been receiving fluids and medical treatment at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas at which the event was taking place, however the 30-year-old was not cleared to compete.

Krylov and Spann had each won two in a row and the pair of action fighters were expected to put on a show for fans watching.

Spann, a former LFA 205-pound champion coming off a huge knockout of Dominick Reyes, was notified of Krylov’s inability to compete as the preliminary card was wrapping up.

Middleweights Andre Muniz and Brendan Allen took over as headliners for what ended up being a 10-fight card.

The main card opened with a battle of Canadian welterweights.

Ontario’s Mike Malott defeated Quebec’s Yohan Lainesse late in the first round with an arm-triangle choke. Lainesse fell to 1-2 in the UFC, while Malott improved to 2-0 under the UFC banner with both victories occurring in the opening round.

Malott pleaded in his post-fight speech for the UFC to return to Canada later this year – specifically to Toronto, so he can fight in front of family and friends.

The UFC has not hosted an event in Canada since a 2019 Fight Night card headlined by Justin Gaethje and Donald Cerrone. The last time the organization hosted an event in Toronto was in December 2018.

Malott, 31, also gave a shout-out to Canadian women’s flyweight fighter Jasmine Jasudavicius who earned a dominant unanimous decision over Gabriella Fernandes on the penultimate preliminary card bout.

All but two fights on the prelims were finished inside the distance with Trevor Peek and Jordan Leavitt picking up notable first-round knockout wins in the lightweight division.
