“Together, we can do better,” wrote Savage in a statement on Instagram announcing his campaign. “I’m running for Congress because it’s time to restore faith in government by offering reasonable, innovative, and compassionate solutions to our country’s most pressing issues.”

The younger brother of The Wonder Years star Fred Savage, Ben Savage followed in his brother’s footsteps into child acting, making his film debut in his elder brother’s movie Little Monsters in 1989. Savage would soon make a name for himself starring as Cory Matthews on the popular ABC coming-of-age sitcom Boy Meets World from 1993 to 2000. He later attended Stanford University, earning a degree in political science, and years after that returned to the role that made him a household name, starring on Disney’s 2014 spin-off series, Girl Meets World.

In his announcement, Savage described himself as a “proud Californian,” “union member,” and a “longtime resident of District 30,” which he seeks to represent in Congress. He also highlighted the importance of family, noting that he “comes from a family of unwavering service to our country and community.” “I firmly believe in standing up for what is right, ensuring equality, and expanding opportunities for all,” his statement continued.

This is not the former child actor’s first foray into politics. In November, Savage ran for one of three seats on West Hollywood’s City Council and lost, earning less than 7% of the votes, according to the Los Angeles County registrar’s office. Despite the loss, Savage has now set his sights higher, running to replace Democratic congressman Adam Schiff. Schiff led the first impeachment trial of former president Donald Trump and is now seeking the Senate seat held by Dianne Feinstein, who recently announced that she’d retire at the end of her term in 2024 after more than 30 years in office.

In January, Savage submitted paperwork to the Federal Election Commission to run as a Democrat in the 30th Congressional District. The district covers heavily populated parts of Southern California, including Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena. “It’s time for new and passionate leaders who can help move our country forward,” Savage said in his statement. “Leaders who want to see the government operating at maximum capacity, unhindered by political divisions and special interests. Please join our movement!”
