Screen Junkies‘ Honest Trailer series returns with an episode centered on Arcane, highlighting Netflix’s surprisingly good video game adaptation. Created and written by Riot Games Creative Director Christian Linke and Creative Designer Alex Yee, the animated series serves as a prequel to the studio’s hit multiplayer online battle arena video game League of LegendsArcane explores the escalating tension between the rich, utopian city of Piltover and its oppressed underbelly city of Zaun, primarily seen through the eyes of sisters Vi and Jinx as they find themselves on opposing sides of a war between the two.

Hailee Steinfeld and Ella Purnell lead the cast of Arcane as Vi and Jinx alongside Mia Sinclair Jenness as Powder, Kevin Alejandro, Katie Leung, Jason Spisak, Harry Lloyd, Toks Olagundoye, JB Blanc, Reed Shannon and Mick Wingert. Development on the series was first announced in 2019 during the League of Legends 10th anniversary celebration, with Riot Games and Fortiche partnering with Netflix for the adaptation. Arcane would premiere in November 2021 to rave reviews from critics and audiences alike and even those with a typically humorous cynical approach to their viewing found themselves surprised.

A few months after its premiere, Screen Junkies has set its Honest Trailer sights on Netflix’s Arcane: League of Legends. Though the video pokes fun at the show’s physically deformed villain trope, it frequently remarks surprise at how good the video game adaptation is. Check out the funny new episode below:

As the Honest Trailer points out, Arcane came as quite the surprise hit upon its Netflix debut this past November. Critics fell in love with the show’s animation, story, worldbuilding, characters and acting and also praised the series for appealing to both League of Legends players and newcomers to the franchise. This acclaim led to Arcane season 1 landing a rare 100 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an equally impressive 96 percent approval rating from audiences.


In addition to the positive reviews, Arcane season 1 became a smash in the ratings for Netflix, quickly becoming its highest-rated series of all-time and ranking first on the Netflix Top 10 Chart in 52 countries and surpassing Stranger Things and The Mandalorian as the most-streamed show of the year in the U.S. This success led subsequently led Netflix to renewing the show for a season 2, which is expected to premiere on the streaming platform sometime after 2022. While audiences wait for the next chapter in the hit animated show, they can catch up with Arcane season 1 now streaming in its entirety on Netflix.
